The first vegan guide geared to African American women

More than forty delicious and nutritious recipes highlighted with color photographs

Menus and advice on transitioning from omnivore to vegan

Resource information and a comprehensive shopping list for restocking the fridge and pantry

African American women are facing a health crisis: Heart disease, stroke, and diabetes occur more frequently among them than among women of other races. Black women comprise the heftiest group in the nation—80 percent are overweight, and 50 percent obese. Decades of studies show that these chronic diseases can be prevented and even reversed with a plant-based diet. But how can you control your weight and health without sacrificing great food and gorgeous curves?

Just ask Tracye Lynn McQuirter. With attitude, inspiration, and expertise, in By Any Greens Necessary McQuirter shows women how to stay healthy, hippy, and happy by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes as part of an active lifestyle. The book is a call to action that all women should heed.

"Finally, a down-to-earth look at plant-based diets for the black community. [This book] will empower even the most staunch omnivore to re-evaluate their food choices and move towards a healthier outlook, not just for themselves, but for the planet."  —Melissa Danielle, coordinator, Black Vegetarian Society of New York (BVSNY.org) and Wellness Communicator (VegetarianHealthCoach.net)

"Even in the Obama era, Black women often believe that we lack choices, and control over our lives. By Any Greens Necessary reminds us that we have the power to make choices, and become heroes in our own lives through the choices we can make with regard to our food."  —Majora, MacArthur "genius" Fellow, host of The Sundance Channel's Eco-Heroes and public radio's The Promised Land, and urban revitalization strategist

"If there's one health book black women should read this year, this is it. By Any Greens Necessary shows us the real deal about how to eat well and get healthy for life"  —Tonya Lewis Lee, writer, producer, activist, and author, Gotham Diaries

"By Any Greens Necessary will change your life."  —Michael Greger, MD, author, Carbophobia: The Scary Truth About America's Low-Carb Craze

"A fascinating read."  —The Root

"A necessary read."  —Curve

More About the Author

A vegan trailblazer, public health nutrition expert, speaker, and author, Tracye McQuirter, M.P.H., is passionate about inspiring people to live healthier, happier lives.

"As a vegan for 23 years, I know what it's like to experience vibrant health. But I also know this makes me uncommon among U.S. women, where up to 80% of us are overweight and up to 50% are obese. As a result, we experience among the highest rates of death and disability from heart attack, cancers, stroke, and diabetes.

The good news is that these chronic diseases can be prevented and often reversed by eating plenty of plant-based foods that we all know are good for us. Foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and legumes (or, beans, nuts, lentils, and split peas).

That means eating meals like Curried Chick Peas with Sun-dried Tomatoes; Spicy Kale Salad; Toasted Olive Bread with Fresh Basil and Garlic Sauce; Chocolate Chip Cookies; and Raspberry Banana Smoothies. Surprised? They're all vegan and they're all delicious!

My passion is empowering people to experience vibrant health--by any greens necessary. I'm living proof that you can be healthy, hippy, and happy by eating a wealth of delicious and nutritious plant-based foods."

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm convinced! May 4, 2010
By NadineR
Format:Paperback
I purchased this book on Saturday at a book signing in Washington DC, read it on Sunday afternoon, and immediately decided to become a vegetarian. I gave up red meat and pork a year ago when I became alarmed by the high rate of cancer in my own circle of friends and family. Dairy followed last fall - for digestive reasons - and I haven't had a cold since.

Reading this book was the push I needed to also say no to chicken and fish. It was especially difficult, disgusting, and disturbing to read about meat processing practices in the US. I can't believe I've eaten the meat products from these industries for this long!

I think everyone should read this book and be fully informed before making dietary decisions. You won't regret it

5.0 out of 5 stars Revolutionary Indeed! April 30, 2010

I received my copy yesterday and couldn't put it down! I finished reading at about 10 o'clock last night and handed it over to my sister. We've been making a conscious effort to eat healthier since February and the information offered by Ms. McQuirter in this book is making me consider taking it up a notch. An excellent and informative read. If you're questioning where your food comes from, how it impacts your health or contributes to larger global issues, this is the book for you because Tracye McQuirter offers facts to make you think, then act, and then adds many intriguing alternative vegan recipes to get you started.

I purchased this book on a whim. I was considering going vegetarian for my health, then decided to look into veganism. The author outlines her reasons for being a vegan, and some points to take into consideration that are very clear and easy to follow. Her book isn't full of someone else's studies and theories, she gives you enough facts with her own words. Even my grandmother read the book and learned some new things. Her book also gives a few recipes that show veganism isn't as complicated as one's health food store shelves lead you to believe. I love this book and have recommended it to friends and family. Thank you Tracye for writing such a wonderful book!
