Book Description

A life of wealth and privilege doesn’t equal happiness—just ask Eric Courtland. Growing up with a cold, unfeeling father and unstable mother has taught him exactly what he doesn’t want out of life or love. The troubled young man prefers a solitary life and is content to keep it that way until a campus emergency saddles him with an unwanted roommate.

Popular, wholesome, straight Nick Thompson is far more temptation than Eric’s prepared for, but Nick’s warm, easygoing manner gradually cracks through Eric’s prickly protective shell.

After Eric suffers a traumatic attack, their friendship gives way to an intense passion. Eric’s no stranger to casual sex, but what he feels for Nick is something deeper, and more fragile.

Independent Eric doesn't know the first thing about being in a relationship, much less with a lover who can't even admit he's gay. But conservative Nick can't seem to find his way out of his own personal closet.

Rock, meet hard place.

(Publisher's note: This is a novella.)

Editorial Reviews

I enjoyed this book and look forward to the further stories of this series... Ms Grant is a skilled writer of emotions and builds characters who grow but need to mature and develop more even at the end of the book. It makes the reader care deeply for them and want them to be successful with each other and in life. This is a character-driven book with angsty plot turns that make the reader ache for the characters. - Mrs. Condit Reads Books

4.0 out of 5 stars A story of friendship, self-discovery and compromise November 28, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
3.75 stars

Eric is a loner. He keeps to himself and he likes it that way. A self-confessed slut, he prefers his encounters with his men to be impersonal and without expectations. Then his world is turned upside down when, after returning from Christmas break, he finds himself with a roommate. A very handsome, football-playing roommate. And from then on he knows he is a goner.

Nick is an attractive jock who lives in denial and fear. He seems like your typical college junior, with a former girlfriend as a best friend and a football scholarship. But he is much more than that. He is an adorable, young man who fears giving in to his desires to be with a man. He doesn't want to disappoint his parents and suffer the ridicule from his teammates. It isn't until he meets Erick that he starts thinking about giving into to his desires, but even after sharing a kiss, he fights it.

I liked that Nick and Eric's relationship started as a friendship. It added to the credibility of the story. From the outside it looked like any college friendship, but in reality these two were in constant fight with their emotions and desires, until that moment when Nick couldn't hold back any longer and gives in. What develops next is a journey of new found affection and lust with heartbreak lurking in the corner.

I love to connect with my characters and although I did get to know them, it wasn't enough for me to connect fully. I enjoyed the interactions between them. However, I wanted more more about the 'in between'. I wanted to see more of them as friends and then as lovers. I wanted the tender moments and the laughs and the getting to know each other.

5.0 out of 5 stars Intensely Emotional & Heartbreaking At Times December 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In this re-worked, newly re-published start to the Courtland Chronicles, the drama is just beginning for two collegians from different economic backgrounds thrown together as a modern-day Oscar and Felix. Eric comes from a family who hides their emotions and hurt others before they let themselves get hurt which has led to him keeping to himself. He tries to keep his surroundings in order since his family life is so out of control until the day a naked football player comes out of his shower. Nick is a farmer's boy used to hard work who's outgoing but keeps a bit of himself hidden from the public. He's turned-off by the sullen Eric at first but a slow bond builds between them that becomes a turn-on to him and has them entering into a relationship that has a profound effect on both of them.

Eric's been out of the closet for many years but Nick doesn't want to deal with the repercussions resulting from this relationship. This becomes a big issue to their happiness. Another issue is Eric's jealousy and fear of admitting his true feelings. This leads to a big speed bump to their happiness that only their mutual friend Ally can fix. This leads to a sweetly satisfying conclusion that feels like the perfect ending.....for now.

The emotional issues in this story are believable and heart wrenching. Eric's home life is sad and I can understand why he's closed himself off. That's why Nick becomes so important to him, he brings peace to his life. He's sturdy and reliable and a breath of fresh air and I love the two of them together. Their relationship built slowly and steadily and culminates in some very sexy sexual interludes that aren't overly erotic, sweetly sensual is how they connect.

Along with these two likable main characters comes their mutual sidekick Ally.

3.0 out of 5 stars Hmm August 26, 2013

I really wanted to like this. It never felt comfortable. The relationships didn't gel. If the sex had been hot, I would have upped my stars to 3.5, since I'm shallow and can be easily entertained by good sex.

4.0 out of 5 stars 4 stars December 6, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
#Review may contain spoilers for other books in this series#

By Chance is the first installment in The Courtland Chronicles by Cat Grant. I enjoyed the romance between Eric Courtland and his college roommate Nick. While Eric is a prickly, selfish bastard in the beginning of the novel, under Grant's deft hand he is turned into a sympathetic character who finally figures out he's worthy of love. I also liked Nick, the shy farm boy who falls for his gay roommate and comes to terms with his own sexuality. This was a nice coming-of-age tale that used the GFY trope expertly.

This 2012 edition has been revised and re-written from an earlier period. Some previous reviews stated that there was "cheating" between Nick and Ally (Nick's friend and former girlfriend), but I did not see that in this version. So for people like me who dislike cheaters, have no fear, there is none of that in here.

As for the rest of the series, I will have to pass, as I don't read menage/triad books, but By Chance can easily stand alone as a self-contained novel of college love and discovery.

2.0 out of 5 stars Tepid July 23, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Very disappointed. No zip. No zing. No tension. Like a lukewarm bowl of soup hold the salt. All the possible interesting, angsty bits were either skipped past with barely a sentence or resolved in a few paragraphs. We're told these guys are in love, we want them to be in love but where's the passion? Towards the end of the book I even started to dislike them. They were so judgmental of each other and for having such broken hearts didn't make much effort to reconcile. No big emotional pay off for the reader. I'm glad this book was free.
