Undoubtedly storytelling at its best! Fantasy, imagination, magic, love, friendship and excitement are all aspects Ms. Russell has managed to weave into the fabric of an entertaining yarn of old. Her colorful and engaging characters jump off the pages and intothe reader's heart. A must read for anyone who loves to read for enjoyment.

I was actually looking forward to reading this but soon became disappointed once I'd started turning the pages. I immediately confess here that I didn't get far with it and I've given it two stars rather than one because I'm prepared to believe that it's the 'Curate's Egg' (good in places) and that it's not so bad that it deserves one.

My issues are with:

1. The dialogue. There are three ways of dealing with dialect. You can do it all in dialect (like the excellent 'Voices in ma heid' which I reviewed a short while back), you can do it all in 'Oxford English' or you can start off in dialect and gradually phase it out. Right of Blood jerks from dialect to OE making our clansman switch from 'Brahd, bricht moonlicht nicht' to 'I say old Bean' in the space of a paragraph.

2. The interchanges. Wooden, stilted and somewhat implausible. It jarred like toothache.

3. Punctuation problems. I had to read several sentences 3 or 4 times to work out what the author was trying to say.

Pity. I just hope there's enough money in the kitty to fork out for an editor because I'm sure a good one could make a real difference. Credit to those who enjoyed reading the book but I felt let down and am now just about to delete it from my collection.

By Right of Blood is a genuine barn burning page turner I simply could not put down. An edge of the seat action packed adventure set in the Scotland of James of England, By Right of Blood introduces you to the world of William Fyllbrige - an world you won't want to put down even to catch your breath. The first story of the Brother's Keeper Trilogy, although originally written third as a prequel, this is a fitting start of an adventure that leads from the Scottish Highlands to the new World and back. Once you start you won't want to put it down, and will be left wanting more when you finish. An enthusiastic 5 stars.By Right of Blood

I think the author did great in character descriptions. William, Edward and Sean stand out as people worth knowing. I would be interested in reading the remaining books in the series. I was never bored. I looked forward to each reading period.

Nice plot with modestly gorey parts. I wish the editing had been better--obviously spell-checker had the upper hand. Decent histrorical atmosphere and detail.

Can't wait to read the sequel. Story line captures your imagination from the beginning. "Blood lines" can be very confusing!

I became emotionally attached to the characters in this story! I love the way Lorrieann makes you feel like you are along for the ride in these great adventures. The historical fiction/fantasy is spot on and adds great character to the story. The transitions between different parts of the story are well done and keep you wanting more. This book was hard to put down and I have read it twice along with the next in this series, My Brother's Keeper by Lorrieann Russell. I am anxiously awaiting the third book of the series, In The Wake Of Ashes. I very highly recommend this series to anyone looking to escape reality for a while and enjoy being in the middle of very well written historical fantasy/fiction!
