UPDATE - Those who bought this when it was first released likely received a defective Addicted DVD. Century Media has set up a replacement program. Need to send a pic of your receipt or a pic of your box set, along with your name and address to byathread@centurymedia.com. I just received the replacement disc on 8/2/12 and everything is great now. I have edited my original review below, removing the stuff about defective DVDs. I have also changed my score from 3 stars to 5.

Original review:

You're going to see some fantastic performances. Nearly everything is spot on, and even when it's not, it's presented warts and all with no "pretend it didn't happen" edits thrown in, which gives it an incredibly legitimate feel (this is even joked about when they do an encore retake of an earlier song). The crowd is energetic when appropriate - the higher volume parts of Ki, the Addicted and Deconstruction shows - and respectful when it's time to quiet things down. Performance-wise this is probably my favorite concert series ever.

The video quality admittedly is a mixed bag from disc to disc, or in some cases song to song...you'll see some pretty noticable macroblocking at points throughout the set. Addicted in particular has an extremely washed-out quality to it, the brightness/contrast is way off. This didn't really diminish my enjoyment of the set at all, just a shame they couldn't get a Blu-Ray done for it. The mix on the audio itself is strictly stereo with no 5.1 mix available (there wasn't enough time to complete one prior to release) but no big deal. Would have been a nice option but it sounds incredible as-is. Also included on the discs is a separate commentary track from Dev, which more than makes up for no 5.1 as far as I'm concerned.

Lots of little hidden extras included as well...check the Hevy Devy forums, there's a thread there listing all of them.

And hey, on top of that they throw in CDs of everything!

Devin is a rare beast and one of the most talented musicians ever. This is an amazing set and sounds and looks great...truly epic versions of all 4 albums. He's in top form and I love everything about this box set...except there are now confirmed DVD manufacturing problems and unfortunately I have one of those sets. I've only made it through 2 dvd's so far because they freeze at every chapter mark and you have to manually rewind and then hit chapter forward so it won't freeze before going to the next song. Annoying and a buzz kill. It sucks for Dev that this is the case, since you know the guy went through an incredible amount of work to pull this all off and some factory messed up the DVD pressing. I'll reorder when they fix the problem as this is something any Dev fan will want to own and it really is an incredible production job of 4 stellar shows. 5 stars for Dev's talent, work and effort he gives to his fans. He has an amazing amount of killer stuff on his Youtube channel so check that out too. Support this artist through purchasing his stuff so he can keep sharing his talents with us!

4.0 out of 5 stars who screwed this up?! April 19, 2013

Seriously! I'm not complaining about the DVDs, I could care less about them. First of all, this is a fantastic performance from Devin and his band. He sounds great, he's got the girl with him (she sounds great) and the band is flourishing. But guess what? Whoever recorded this show did a terrible job.

First, there is almost NO BOTTOM-END to the band's sound. I have a nice stereo and like to crank the tunes. I figured if I adjusted the bass, things would improve, but nope! The songs sound grainy and have ear-piercing terrible levels. Adjust your frequencies all you want, but it doesn't get much better. This is a big problem with Devin's style of music, and metal in general. You NEED good bass response! Who the hell mixed this?

Also, the louder you go, the worse it sounds. The volume seems to fluctuate, like some kinda phaser effect. Super annoying; makes you turn it right back down. The overall sound is heavily fuzzed, washed out and weak. This isn't the band, it's the guys who screwed up this recording. The sound quality is comparable to a decent bootleg...

It's just too bad, the band is rockin'. I'm similar to many Devy fans. I love some albums, and don't get into others. Yet, I get excited to hear EVERY SONG live, because the songs kinda get played in a similar approach that Devin uses for live shows. Songs I didn't like before are suddenly awesome.

One final note, if you've never been lucky enough to see these guys play live, this album does a decent job of capturing the dynamic of being at a DTP concert. Devin's comments and interaction with the crowd make it fun and more interesting. I do like that. I guess I can't complain about it too much more. 56 songs for $10? That's not a bad deal. Maybe the price is so low because the sound is so bad...

4.0 out of 5 stars The four sides of Devin Townsend July 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD
These four concerts contains a very different atmosphere each of them. KI had some mellow tracks that offers some up-tempo moments to keep the show interesting. Addicted is very intense and represent the typical Devin Townsend sound, with a melody slowly developed with raging guitar in a dense atmosphere. Ghost is very quiet, with flute, acoustic guitar and more restraint vocals by Devin. This last concert require more patience to get into, but when you get across the ambient passages, you can enjoy the melody again. Deconstruction is a progressive metal tour de force that shows complex playing, a symphonic approach with choir and classical arrangements. At times it remind me of Therion and Unexpect, the latter when multiple notes are played in a short time. This is the show where you have more animated videos with the character "Ziltoid" that could be cool for young metal heads, but for me it didn't seem to fit here. The encores offers another type of music, definitely punk oriented with simple and direct songs.

Also on each DVD, there a commentary tracks by Devin Townsend himself. Only interesting for the musicians out there, or those who want hear the stomach reaction of a guy while he drinks! For the picture and sound quality, it has been made on a low budget, so i won't be too critical about this issue, as long as the stereo sound is decent, which is the case here. My little criticism is about the excessive use of the red lights on each concerts, that give some unwatchable reflections on the face of the musicians.

Devin Townsend has all my respect for all the work he has put in this project (18 hours of material). It's not perfect but it's made with passion and dedication.

I can't believe how cheap this is!!!
My thoughts exactly.

I actually snagged it in person at a Newbury Comics location in the northeastern USA on its release date for $39.99. Doubt it'll ever be that cheap again, but it's phenomenal. More than worth any price that's even somewhat within reason put on it. I wasn't fortunate enough... Read More
