This book with CD was recommended to me, so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect. It was a used item that arrived in practically brand-new and unused condition. The CD nestles safely inside the hardcover book. The book is small and contains stories and pictures to go with the words of the songs on the accompanying CD. The songs are presented as close to the original renditions as can be. These stories and songs express the spirit of Texas in a powerful and meaningful way. The pictures in the book are priceless and seem to take you back to another age. I put the CD on and read the book while listening to the old songs and when it was over, I felt like I had been on a guided tour of a living museum, or even a trip back in time. Few products are so well organized and presented. This product is for anyone who loves their Texas heritage. Even if you are not from East Texas, so much of our heritage is found in the words and music of these stories. Hats off!

This book/cd is a national treasure..!! Anyone interested in Texas history will love this. The talent and amount of research in this work is well worth the price...it literally transports you to an earlier time in song and script..I had understood this book/cd was not available anymore and was delighted to know it had been re-released. There is a companion piece called Settlers of the Western Woods. (This would be East Texas in the 1800's)...Marvelous....

This book and the songs included in this book belong to American national treasure. Every school in the United States should have this book and used it for educating young Americans about own history, geography and culture. Steve Hartz collected songs that would have otherwise disappeared from American history and culture; he recorded them in pure tones that sound with simplicity and sincerity like silver stars shinning in the night. I highly recommend this book to everyone who appreciates high quality of music, pure sound and deep cultural values of Americana. This is definitely a national treasure; in this age of consumerism and empty comercial music, this work is priceless.
