Editorial Reviews

''I like to inspire confidence. I feel people are too self-aware and worried about their looks or their gut or whatever and I feel if I go onstage and go 'who gives a f***?' it really inspires people and helps them throw those inhibitions out the door.'' ''Bye Bye 17'' by Har Mar Superstar was written in New York City and recorded in Austin, TX. The ten songs, a departure from his previous work, are soulful glimpses into a world of hedonism and heartache, magically embedded in a 3rd generation VHS tape. Poised to break free from the claustrophobic confines of the underground club scene, and after many years of wild shows and after-hours adventures with strangers, Har Mar Superstar will soon be touring extensively to support his strongest record yet. Sean Tillmann named his flamboyant alter-ego after the Har Mar mall in suburban St. Paul, MN where he spent his youth watching movies and writing songs about passers-by in the food court. ''Har Mar Superstar used to be a different person, it used to be my excuse to get away with the more fantastic things in life...it was easier to get onstage as this other guy and be outrageous and have it be glorified. I guess the confidence I got from being Har Mar Superstar translated into my real life so now we're one and the same.'' For this new LP, Tillmann was inspired by the excitement and the isolation of New York City, and crafted the songs for ''Bye Bye 17'' there, occasionally collaborating with writers like Fab Moretti (''Prisoner''), Kelly Gately (''Rhythm Bruises''), and Ryan Olson (''We Don t Sleep''), before deciding to permanently relocate to the East Coast from Los Angeles. ''Just walking around NY and seeing people constantly being together alone is, I think, a huge influence on the whole record. I was influenced by the city in general because I wrote most of the songs here before I even lived here. And I just didn't want to leave, that's why I moved. It's a very New York record.'' Tillmann co-produced the tracks with Jim Eno (Spoon) at his Austin studio with a full live band, before finishing work and remixing the album at Cult Records' New York studios. Focusing this time more on his voice, Tillmann says, ''I was listening to a lot of Otis Redding and Sam Cooke at the time, and I've always been obsessed with those guys... 'Restless Leg,' 'We Don t Sleep,' 'Prisoner' and 'Rhythm Bruises' came out of people playing together. But the rest were just like me in a room, gettin' weird, by myself.''

I hadn't heard Har Mar's previous music, but after hearing his new single (Lady, You Shot Me) on the radio I was very intrigued!

I enjoy every last track on this album, a lot of fun funky songs with an old-school vibe to them and great band instrumentals. I enjoyed this album so much that I ended up going solo (last minute) to one of his performances and it was a blast!

From what I'm discovering with his past work, this album is a departure from his usual wacky hip-hop and pop songs, so if you've written him off because of those I would give this album a shot!

This is a great album and, as we all know, a bit more palpable than many of Har Mar Superstar's others. The music is easy to love and lyrically interesting. I gave it to my dad for Christmas. Other than the song that I'm pretty sure is about bondage, it was a perfect gift.

One of the most interesting albums I've heard in a long time. Its a very throwback album, Har Mar takes a totally different style on this one.

I've been a Har Mar fan since I first saw him in a choir robe stealing the show from Atom and His Package with nothing but a MiniDisc player as his "DJ" and I think he just keeps getting better. This album is a departure from those previous, but it still makes me want to dance and..."dance" as well.

Fans of old school R&B will love this album for its lo-fi 60s vibe and old Har Mar fans will appreciate the new direction. Considering Sean AKA Har Mar's pop roots and tendency toward darker lyrics, fans of both Sean Na Na and Har Mar Superstar are likely to see this as a perfect marriage of his and his alter ego's musical styles.

Bye Bye 17 is simply perfect from start to finish. I'm going to listen to it again right now.

Nice progression from his earlier albums. You can tell he is ready to be taken more seriously as a musician these days. Love his voice and the fun dancy beats.

Har Mar Superstar brings your ears a soulful throw back experience with Bye Bye 17. I'm a fan of nearly any soul/funk/r&b and this album really kills it. You would be fooled thinking this was a re-release of some forgotten 70's album, but that is just the thoughtful work put into the recording. The vinyl is a nice weight, probably 160-180 grams. The jacket is a semi-gloss finish and the sleeve is charcoal colored with a Cult Records printed on it. It includes a digital download card that gives you high quality mp3 files. All in all, great album and it earns a place in the record collection.

It sounds like he's been writing songs like this his whole life. This is a really good collection of songs that can be listened to from start to finish.

It's a soulful, original yet familiar traipse through meaningful music. The gorgeous harmonies are punctuated with bold brass, showing what vinyl was made for. My only qualm is that the album is too short.
