Good basic introduction to Finnish, September 6, 2011
This review is from: Byki Finnish Language Tutor Software & Audio Learning CD-ROM for Windows & Mac (CD-ROM)
Good beginner program. Finnish is all memorization and the spelling is horrendous. This program uses electronic flash cards and some exercises to help you memorize and spell. If you get bored with one list, you can switch but it's best to stick with and memorize fully before moving on. If I had any criticism it's that the study lists are not ordered by usefulness. You pick the lists that you want to learn and in what order with no guidance from the program. I do like the pronounciation meter because using a headset you can record your voice and check your accuracy. I also have Swedish and Russian language programs from Byki and they're much the same. It's all up to the student with learning a new language. Programs that promise to teach you "fast" are expensive crap. No program substitutes for daily memorization and lots of hard work. I live in Finland now and the language is very hard with many cases. You must practice at every opportunity or it won't stick because it's too different from English. Overall, I'm pleased for the price and would recommend as a good place to learn basic Finnish words and phrases, but you're going to need a grammer explanation book and a good dictionary as well.
