Book Description

December 15, 2004
MIKE HAMMER AND OTHER ADVENTURES

Probably the most influential mystery writer to emerge after the Second World War and certainly the bestseller was Mickey Spillane and his tough P.I. Mike Hammer. I, the Jury, Kiss Me Deadly, and other novels introduced a tough, fast and violent hero who lived in a tough, fast, and violent world, but which he described with a rough poetry.

Byline: Mickey Spillane is a treasury of riches for Spillane fans. It includes in short-story form two Mike Hammer cases which later appeared as novels, a long lost Hammer story which was recovered by Lynn F. Myers, Jr., the transcript of a Mike Hammer playlet, three reproductions of rare comic books featuring Mike’s predecessors – Mike Lancer and Mike Danger – who were also created by Mickey Spillane, as well as fourteen articles by Mickey Spillane when he himself lived a life of adventure – diving for sunken treasure, racing sports cars, working in a circus, and chasing hot rod moonshiners.

Edited and with introduction by Spillane experts Max Allan Collins, and Lynn F. Myers, Jr., Byline: Mickey Spillane is an extraordinary collection by an extraordinary writer. The cover design is by Gail Cross.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

This collection of journalism and short fiction is like truck-stop meatloaf: there's lots of filler, but the meat you do get is savory. Mike Hammer fans will get a kick out of the comic-book exploits of the PI's precursor, Mike Danger. And they are sure to enjoy the three Hammer short stories--especially "The Killing Man," a gritty Shamus Award winner, and a previously unpublished comedic caper from the mid-1950s, "The Duke Alexander," that's reminiscent of Mark Twain. The magazine stories, which focus on such tough-guy pursuits as diving for treasure and racing stock cars, marry the style of early Tom Wolfe with the attitude of late Joe Friday. Editors Collins and Myers also definitively answer why Spillane dropped out of the novel-writing game for most of the 1950s. It wasn't fights with his publisher or his becoming a Jehovah's Witness. Film-rights sales and the success of 1952's Kiss Me, Deadly simply gave Spillane the opportunity to play hooky, and he took it. Smart guy.^B Frank Sennett

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed Stories - Sloppy Production, February 7, 2011

This review is from: Byline: Mickey Spillane (Paperback)
We happened to eat dinner in Myrtle Beach one evening at the same time Mickey Spillane was celebrating a birthday in the same restaurant. He seemed like a really likable fellow. I had never read any of his works and thought I'd like to give him a read. "Byline" was the most current available, so I decided to try it. It was not what I expected (I should have read the reviews to find out!), but none the less I still enjoyed it. I was able to sample his writing, learn more about his life, and read some Mike Hammer as well. So I enjoyed the read. But I must say the production quality on the soft-cover was awful. Throughout there were many cases of words that had passed a spell check, but were obviously the wrong word. And one of the comic books included even had the sequence of pages messed up. Just very sloppy editing.Byline: Mickey Spillane
