Byrd Raven G-10 Holds up Well,
This review is from: Byrd Raven G-10 Combination Edge Knife,Black (Sports)
It has a good design company behind it. Byrd is a Spyderco company targeting the cheaper priced knife market, and they did well with this knife. Byrd knives are made in China and that almost put me off of it. But, this is a company that seems to have specifically targeted those in the market for a functional defense knife but who either can't or won't pay very high prices for this type of knife, and still expect a good knife for their money. In this case, I think Byrd hit the target well. I'm glad I took a chance on the purchase. In my case it turns out to be a good all-around work knife for a cheap price. It seems that it was built to be a light weight defense knife, and I bought it to serve as such, but it rapidly became an all-around work knife for me because it holds up to use and abuse and it is still capable of being used for defense. I've had it for over a year and carry it every day. Its black coloring has started to fade off in frequently contacted areas of the frame revealing shiny steel beneath. The blade itself has remained black and its edge stayed very sharp despite frequent use cutting plastic, hard wood, thin wire and soft metals. It also held up under moderate abuse like using it to pry open plastic and metal lids on cans, or scraping paint off wood surfaces. However, recently the edge finally started to dull when I used it to trim foam insulation and inadvertently ran the blade several times along solid foundation concrete. Even though it was no longer extra sharp it was still sharp enough to cut shavings of wood with the non-serrated part of the blade! The serrated portion of the blade was still as sharp as ever. I was also pleased to find that the edge came back after a minute of free hand sharpening on my grinding stone. Also, the oval shape of the frame fits very nicely in my hand. I've grown very used to it. All in all it's a pretty good knife for the price. I'm thinking about ordering another one.

Just received this knife literally 5 minutes ago. I opened it and the blade doesn't come black! Even the order says serrated BLACK but i recieved a plain color. Don't know if I should return it or complain.

Came within 3 business days, and shaving sharp.
However, my only concern is that is seems to have been an old knife, one that's been sitting for a while judging from the grime and dust on the inside. Also, it seems a bit loose when closed and opens with a good wrist flick without even using the thumb hole, which I personally dislike because it prevents a couple safety hazards. Otherwise, this seems to be a great edc/tactical knife. Lightweight, very strong construction, no knife play at all.

The steel is 8Cr13Mov, very good steel at this price point. Where you go wrong is the construction: the blade plays laterally and vertically, and becomes looser with each opening. The screws are torx screws (star shaped), and sufficiently soft enough to become stripped when you try to tighten them. The clip on mine came loose too: again, the torx screws wouldn't tighten and the clip stayed loose. One day on a walk, it fell out as was never seen again. Not worth it, considering you can go for a real Spyderco for not too much more money (check the Spyderco Tenacious G-10 Handle Folding Serrated Edge Knife). I also didn't much like the weird patterned plastic of the handles.
Stay away, these knives are for the birds. |
