Book Description

March 1, 2001
For over 1000 years, Constantinople thrived as the "New Rome", the capital of the Byzantine Empire. During this time the wealth of the empire was used to create masterpieces of architecture and art, many of which still remain in Istanbul to this day. This collection of pleasant walks reveals the splendid legacy of the Byzantines. From the magnificent domed nave of the Hagia Sophia to the majestic remains of the 1500 year-old Theodosian land walls, from the exquisite mosaics of the Chora Church to the Greek Orthodox churches of the Bosphorus and Fener, this book explores some of the finest treasures Istanbul has to offer. Against a backdrop of monuments, churches, palaces and sacred springs, the history, culture, art and religion of the Byzantines are presented and explained. Anecdotes introduce the figures and events that shaped the Byzantine era.

Or this would have four stars. The pictures are good and the information is better in this thin and concise yet valuable volume. However, the published seriously overcharged for this book - it would be more appropriate to pay about ten dollars less.

This review is from: Byzantine Istanbul (Paperback)
I was not though impressed with the photography, but I found this book immensly useful during my last rip to Constantinople. I am a scholar in this field my self but the author really knows his stuff (although there are some mistakes in dates. He is entetaining too. You will enjoy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Innocent in Budapest, June 25, 2011

Rick Steves' city guide to Budapest is but one of his series of excellent travel guides. To those who are used to Lonely Planet, whose writers seem to rely more and more on past experiences that can be out of date, Steves provides a new and invigorating exploration which takes the reader anbd traveller on interesting and informative explorations of the places about which he writes.

His city walks are full of information, not only of places to explore but also of restaurants and cafes along the way, just where a rest seems appropriate.

I was even more pleased that his Budapest book gave information as to booking for the Hungarian State Opera and other major cultural events, while his section on food and wine included little shops in which to buy regional specialities.

His extension into the surruonding areas, which provide suggestions for sl;ightly extended stays.
is also greatly appreciated.

Most important, however, ius the format which provides aeasy and clear information on all aspects of travelling in this city.
