5.0 out of 5 stars GETTING BETTER EVERY TIME!
BYZANTIUM is definitely different in style and sound from the previous releases which is what makes it so great! There is something for EVERYONE on this cd. My personal favorite PARKBENCH (Toby Pipes). It somewhat of personal meaning to myself, but only TOBY could "take you there..." CHECK it out! And guys the new one is coming soon.... (SPACE STATION EARTH)

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly a Hidden Gem, July 4, 2010

Following Deep Blue Something's major label release of Home with the hit Breakfast at Tiffany's they came into legal trouble over the copyright to their indie release 11th Song, their hit song Breakfast at Tiffany's and fired band member Kirk Tatom. All this and Interscope wanted to hold this album put the band in a bind and this album was released only in Japan and Europe. It appears the band finally got the rights to their material and it's now under their drummer's label Kirtland Records.

Enough history though. The important thing is this is probably their most daring album they've ever made. There aren't any songs resembling Breakfast At Tiffany's on here, but the songs which are on here are amazing. The band dabbles in Dream Pop with amazingly crafted songs like Parkbench, Dr Crippen and Pullman Washington, all easily fitting into the top 10 songs DBS has ever done in my opinion. They also have a lot of great punchy rock songs, such as Cherry Lime Rickey, Tonight, William H. Bonney and Light The Fuse.

Following this release, Deep Blue Something released a self titled album and borrowed 5 tracks from this and put them on it. Even if you already own the s/t Deep Blue Something, and don't want to buy the repeats, removing the 5 tracks and treating it as a 10 track album of different material, you will still have an oasis of amazing under appreciated rock.

If you buy only one Deep Blue Something album, make it this one.

4.0 out of 5 stars great considering what I paid for it!, June 29, 2002

As you can probably guess from the title, I got this cd very cheap from a clearout sale in a music shop. Because of this I assumed it would be no good, but I really like it. Most of the songs are good, and they are quite varied which i like. My favourite is 'Pullman, Washington', sang by Todd. I only wish it included 'breakfast at tiffanys', but it is good enough without it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Local Fanatic " It just gets better and better everytime", June 17, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Byzantium (Audio CD)
The better bands come out of Denton and this one is by far the best! I too wish that they would release more in the US, at least in Dallas, if no where else. A few reviews have said that they are a one hit wonder with "Breakfast At Tiffany's". No doubt everyone loved the song, but the one hit that gets released is never the best song they produce, ex. Red Light (Home), A Song To Make Love To (Home), Parkbench (Byzantium), Loneliest Man (11th Song). Only a real music fan and Deep Blue Something Fanatic could know. Can't wait for the next one, which the real fans may like to know, they've already started working on it. Hey John, as you already know, you're the greatest!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Deep Blue turns out another pleasant CD., February 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Byzantium (Audio CD)
Deep Blue, a band from Denton, Tx, proved that bands can have a hit song and not get caught up in themselves. The music sticks close to the bands roots. The only dissapointment is that "Loneliest Man" was not remade and included in this CD. This could have been the one that followed up "Tiffany" with a punch. "Tonight" appears to be the first release if the CD ever makes it to the U.S. Hope to see this band continue to play smaller venues like Rick's Place in Denton or The Curtain Club in Dallas.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cd flows great - love the new stuff!, October 6, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Byzantium (Audio CD)
I love this band. They have really come along way. My only wish is they would release more material in the U.S. The fact that this band writes their own music makes them even better. Their softer side is really nice. The new CD has fantastic songs and plays from start to finish smoothly, catching your emotions with each song.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great music, lacks flow, December 3, 1999
By
This review is from: Byzantium (Audio CD)
Okay, well, every single one of the songs on this album is great. They really have musical talent, and I think if they keep up this great sound, Deep Blue Something will hit the charts once again. They have uniqe sounds to guitar, and create an interesting echo at times, which I like a lot.

But... this cd is really lacking flow. None of the songs fit together, they're just randomly placed, sounding all vastly different from each other. While the music is great, the lack of flow takes away from the overall quality of this album. It's an album you're most likely going to end up skipping around tracks just to get a remote feel of flow.

Besides that, I think that Todd Pipes (lead vocals) has a great voice, and so does Toby Pipes (second lead). They might have lost a little when they ditched their old guitarist, Kirk Tatom, but it wasn't all that bad when they replaced him with Clay Bergus. Clay is also a talented guitarist.

Due to legal problems, they were unable to release this album in the USA, even though the first album sold well and Breakfast At Tiffany's will never be forgotten. It's going to make it all the more difficult for them to make a hit when they release their new album "This Spaceship Called Earth" in the Spring of 2000. We can only wait and see what happens.

As for this album, it's good... but the next one will need to be improved from this.
