The AC-130 gunship combined heavy carrying capacity and long “loiter time” or endurance and range with very heavy firepower to provide a very effective ground and fire suppression attack aircraft. Unlike conventional airborne attacks the AC-130 fires a heavy barrage of fire out the side of the airplane as it circles a target. No other aircraft can match the volume of fire produced by using a combination of 20mm mini-guns and 105mm howitzers.
