GameSpot Review

After the last Contra game, which in case you've blocked it from your memory was a terrible failure, you'd think that Konami would have the sense to put together a decent follow-up in an attempt to right its past wrongs. But this is not the case. Appaloosa Interactive has managed to develop a game that, in some ways, is even worse than Legacy of War. The game is played from two perspectives. The first is an attempt to return to the side-scrolling ways of old-school Contra. The camera occasionally does some funny stuff to make it seem 3D, much like Pandemonium. The other mode is a top-down perspective similar to Legacy of War. The game's weaponry lacks any significant punch, partially due to the terrible sound effects, but the shots also don't look very impressive. The spread gun is still effective but doesn't look or sound as fearsome as it should. The graphics in the game are just plain bad. From the opening title screen, that looks like it came from a fourth-grade art class, to the blocky polygonal characters and ugly sprite-based explosions, nothing looks good. The music sounds like the guy that makes all the music for the Charlie Brown specials was told to write war tunes, and the shots, screams, and explosions that make up the effects are all very drab. Most of the game's levels are played from the top-down perspective, which, unfortunately, is the weaker of the two perspectives. Of course, the side-scrolling levels aren't exactly great, either. So what you're left with is a bad shooter that doesn't even resemble a Contra game most of the time. You can hold multiple weapons and take more than one hit before dying, and you also have smart bombs. It's hard to believe that Konami would release yet another sorry game with the Contra name on it. You would think it would have learned from Legacy of War and put more effort into the next game. If you want to play a good Contra game, pull out your NES or SNES. There's really nothing in this game worth checking out.--Jeff Gerstmann--Copyright © 1998 GameSpot Inc. All rights reserved. 4.0 out of 5 stars The Only Good Review of "C: The Contra Adventure", March 7, 2000
By A Customer

This review is from: C: The Contra Adventure (Video Game)
"C: The Contra Adventure" is the second "Contra" game to hit the Playstation. "Contra Adventure" has been said, by many reviewers, to be very bad and not worth buying. I disagree. While not completely standard "Contra" fare, "Contra Adventure" is certainly not bad. The same "blow up every single thing that moves while trying to survive" gameplay remains, now in 3D enviroments. That alone makes it worthy of a purchase. The sound is okay. The explosions and gunfire sound great, and the music, ranging from very good to somewhat unusual, isn't very bad. Your character also spits out a wide variety of one-liners when he destroys enemies, saying things like "Sit down, punk!" and "Check, please". The voice clips aren't digitized very well, but, you'll laugh at the comments, regardless, because you'll either think they're funny, corny, or stupid. The graphics look pretty good, especially in the side-scrolling levels (both of them). They can be a bit grainy at times, though. Play control is excellent, responding perfectly to every button press, which is very necessary. This game can be very difficult at times, especially on the hard mode where everything can get completely out of hand. There's a good chance you won't beat the first level on your first try. I'd recommend this game for the true "Contra" fan, any hot shot gamer who thinks he/she can beat any game, or someone who likes the old formula of "Less thinking, more blasting". That's my two cents.

I also recommend: Any other "Contra" game, "Duke Nukem: Zero Hour", "Duke Nukem: Time to Kill".

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but a bit disappointing, August 23, 2003

I Played this game about 5 years ago. It's was good, but it was also a bit disappointing. First of all, there's no two player mode. Second, the game gets too difficult too fast. And finally, the graphics make the game look very dated. Only the first level is 2D, the rest are 3D and overhead. If you're a contra fan, then you might like this. Otherwise look elsewhere.
