We put this in our dog's water and it helps immensely. Makes a really big difference, but you HAVE to use it every single day. It totally prevents plaque buildup on his teeth. After a teeth cleaning it used to take only about a month before his teeth began looking dirty (and he does NOT do well to having his teeth brushed), but since we've been using the Aquadent, his teeth look clean and it's been 10 months since his last teeth cleaning. I tasted the stuff just to see what he's drinking, and it's completely tasteless and odorless. Just follow the directions carefully so you don't overdose your dog on the chemicals. By the way, we originally began using the Aquadent when my dog's teeth were already dirty. The Aquadent prevented more plaque buildup, but it did not really make his teeth cleaner. Then, when we had his teeth cleaned, and we continued using the Aquadent, it has totally prevented his teeth from building up plaque. Best to start with a clean slate. Apparently, cats seem to have excellent results getting their teeth clean just by using the Aquadent, as I've heard from several people, but it has worked best for my dog when his teeth were freshly cleaned by the veterinarian. Excellent product to use! UPDATE: When the ASPCA issued the press release on the dangers of Xylitol I made 2 phone calls. First, I called C.E.T. (the makers of Aquadent), who informed me that they had NO plans to change the formulation of the product to eliminate the xylitol. Hmmm. Then I called the ASPCA and spoke to one of their head veterinarians who was very nice and completely thorough. He said that based on the dosage on the bottle, it was safe for dogs. Of course, I'm sure that every dog is different and some are probably more susceptible to xylitol poisoning than others, but he did say that if the directions on the bottle are followed, then the stuff is ok. I'm not too pleased with the blue color. I don't know why it can't be clear. I'm planning to try Triple Pet plaque off, as it does not have any dyes, colors, or sweeteners (xylitol). Hopefully it will continue to help prevent plaque and tartar buildup.

Toxic for pets: Xylitol,
By
This review is from: CET AquaDent 500mL (Misc.)
In July 2004, ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center issued a xylitol warning. ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center managed about 70 cases involving xylitol-containing products in 2004, more than 170 cases in 2005 and about 114 cases from January to August 2006. Some of the pets died.
According to Dr. Eric Dunayer, veterinarian and toxicologist for the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center, dogs ingesting significant amounts of items sweetened with xylitol could develop a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures. "These signs can develop quite rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product. Therefore, it is crucial that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately." Please, for the sake of your pets, read labels and disclaimers carefully before administering this medication and refer to aspca.org for further information. Personally, I will not take this risk.

It is with regret and after a valiant attempt that I've decided to not purchase this product again and have gone with a competitive water additive. I called the manufacturer to ask if they had a similar product without xylitol or had plans to produce this without xylitol or even what the purpose of adding xylitol (sweetener) was outside of flavor and the repetitive response was no, the amount of xylitol was very small. So sorry, the tartar removing aspect of this product is very good but I can't knowingly add toxins to my dogs' water in any amount outside of what is probably already unknowingly there. I have dogs ranging in weight from 20 to 100 lbs and used the smallest recommended amount but can't fathom a manufacturer including toxins of any sort. Maybe it won't hurt my dogs but I'm not taking the chance. And I'm now scrutinizing ALL Virbac products I use and researching replacements since losing confidence in their intentions. My recommendation would have been to just take it out, the competitive additive also works and does not have it but there did not seem much interest during my call to them in an opinion they must have already heard multiple times. Without the xylitol I would rate the product five stars. With it, none, you just can't add poison to a product you give a beloved pet, no matter how small an amount especially when it provides no beneficial purpose. Period.

Cat Medicine,

Delivered on time and in good condition. Works for cat gingervitus or however you spell it. Lots cheaper than buying it at the Vet. When added to water the Kittys don't seem to mind. C.E.T. Aquadent was recommended by my vet. and it turned bright red gums to a healthy pink in about a week.

I ordered this for my 2 little dogs thinking I was doing a GOOD thing. Then both got sick. It wasn't until later that I saw a pattern. They would drink their water with the Aquadent then get sick (their pooh had a weird slimy film, so I had to have multiple fecal tests to determine it wasn't worms or a parasite). Gave them regular water=not sick. After a little research and talking to my vet (yes, one had urine in her blood with a temp of 104) turns out XYLITOL is a known toxic chemical to dogs!!!!! WTF? How this company justifies adding this ingredient in a DOG PRODUCT is beyond me. It's not some conspiracy group saying xylitol is toxic... you will find the data and studies by the American Veterinary Medical Association, SPCA, and other respected animal groups.
Even the company will tell you that xylitol is toxic to dogs (as I found out after calling to complain!) Save yourself a massive vet bill and avoid this like the plague! The company insisted that my dogs did not get sick from this. But now my vet is worried that the dogs could have suffered kidney/liver damage so I now have to get them regularly tested.

It should be well known by now never to leave your pet alone with your xylitol gum. Now they go and put xylitol in a pet product??? Do not use this product!

Xylitol a known toxin to dogs.why would anyone give their pet a known Toxin?? Just wondering!! You can google xylitol.I just returned a bottle my mother's vet charged her $30.00 for. If your dog has seizures, your vet will make lots more money; so they apparently don't care if you poison your pet. you know what?? a little toxin is NOT A GOOD THING!!!

Great for Cat's Teeth,

Our vet told us that our youngest cat was starting to show some problems with his teeth; I can't recall if it was tartar, plaque, or something else. He gave us this and said to mix 5 mL into 2 cups of fresh water every day.
When we went back a year later, his teeth were in great shape! Same this year. You really can't ask for more for a product than for it to do exactly what it's expected to do.

Cat won't drink it,
By
This review is from: CET AquaDent 500mL (Misc.)
My problem with this product is not the xylitol. My vet talked with me for a long time about this and explained that multiple studies have shown that the amount of xylitol present is not a problem. Lots of things are toxic if you ingest too much of them. But the problem with Aquadent is that my cat will not touch his water when the Aquadent has been added. I tried starting with just one drop, which he was fine with, and then I very gradually added more over several weeks. As soon as it got to 1/8 teaspoon, he wouldn't touch it anymore. I stayed firm for several days, but he was getting so desperate that he would sit in the kitchen sink and lick the tap trying to get water. It's not good for cats to drink too little water because they are already prone to kidney problems. So I gave up and learned how to brush his teeth instead. He's not entirely happy about having his teeth brushed, but he's learning to tolerate it.

Toxic,
By S. P. (colorado) - See all my reviews

Hi. I want to point out that the main ingredient in this product is Xylitol which has been shown to be toxic to dogs. Xylitol is a sugar analog which binds various enzymes in the cell but cannot be metabolized as a real sugar. Consequently, this substance can mess up sugar metabolism in canines resulting in acute (and sometimes fatal) hypoglycemia. Don't take my word for it, google it. Xylitol is added to human mouthwash as an active ingredient (in addition to serving as the sweeting agent)-- I think it may inhibit peridontal microbes by blocking their sugar metabolism (don't quote me on this part). Xylitol has not been found to be toxic to humans, and, despite the large amount contained in a mouthwash, we spit it out. Never put anything in your poor pooches water supply! SP
