A perfect book to begin : C++ programming.,
By A Customer
This review is from: C++: An Introduction to Computing (2nd Edition) (Textbook Binding)
Hi! I am student in the University of Texas at Austin majoring in Computer Science. I am using this book for my C++ progamming class. The book starts with simple things and builds up. Each chapter is nicely divided in subsections. Each and every section has an example and the syntax and format is clearly marked in a different color and this pattern has been consistently followed throughout the book. Each chapter has a section named "Part of the Picture:" which focuses on the application part. This gives me a broader picture about its use and forces me to use C++ in problem solving. Each section has many quick quizes, programming problems which tests my understanding. The authors have consistently followed Object Centered Design and reusable code. One of the authors has included his website where most of the examples are available for many platforms. Students can easily download them and can run them to get a clear picture without wasting time keying into an editor and then compiling it.

I am an electrical engineer. I tried many books to learn & understand C++. There is a lot of 24hrs,21 days & unleashed stuff out there but this book is amazing. The best thing about this book is its approach towards computing, how it builds up. When you start reading from cover to cover, everything is the basis of next thing to come. First i was amazed seeing its sequence of topics, as compared to other books on the subject it was completely different and now i know why. Most of the books on C++ usually have classes and advanced topics very early (that's why people complain C++ is complex); but this book gives you a very solid foundation to understand these topics. I never thought C++ was so easy.

A GREAT book for new C++ programmers!,

I am a student at Texas A&M University - Kingsville. I have experienced this book to be quite easy to follow. It also goes through each of the steps in the programs and explains as to how and why a particular statement was written. It made it easier for me to understand some fundamental principles of C++. Also, this book made C++ seem a lot simpler than what a beginner normally expects. I must add that even though this book may have all the essentials provided in a very organized way, it is up to you (the reader) to read and understand it.

Excellent text and concise examples,

This book is one of the few C++ books that I have read and been able to accomplish things with. The text is clearly written with examples that back up nearly all of the statements. It is an introduction so it does have some foreshadowing to advanced techniques that they don't completely explain, but I am sure the sequel (as they mention) will be just as good! I am new to object oriented programming and design. This text starts you off with a sure fire method of writing a precise algorithm with the use of object centered design (OCD). There are several examples of the OCD style. Nearly every chapter begins with a OCD document and an example of what you are going to learn. I really liked this a lot because I could always refer to the beginning of the chapter to note syntax. This book is excellent for a beginning C++ programmer. I HIGHLY suggest getting this book.

This is the best introductory C++ text in the world!,

This review is from: C++: An Introduction to Computing (2nd Edition) (Textbook Binding)
I read this in place of my required college textbook on the advice of a friend. I browsed several books on C++, and this was the best one. Every topic was discussed in general at first, and then in greater detail in later chapters. If you want to learn C++ in particular, and object oriented programming in general, I can't image a better written textbook. The author also presents a methodical approach to developing algorithms, which I have found useful in other programming subjects. You must read this book!

This book would be good for complete programming beginners.,

This review is from: C++: An Introduction to Computing (Paperback)
This book was designed for total beginners. I got my copy as the textbook for CSC155: An Introduction to Computer Science at my local community college. The main problem with this book is that if you understand a point already, the way this book goes over and over often trivial examples will drive you crazy. If you don't understand a particular point, it is a great book to read because by the time you finish reading a section you will understand the point. As a result, an experienced C programmer will absolutely hate this book, while someone new to computing will alternate between 'jeez these guys write too much' and 'I don't get this...' read... read... 'Ok I get it'. On the whole, I like this book but it took me a whole semester to realize it

5 star's because its one of the few books that has been helping grasp C++.
1 star due to; C++: An Introduction to Computing, 3/E, is a good book and I like the style. However it is a college/University text book. With this university text you can not get the answers or source code to the programming problems or the quizzes specific to this book. Those glowing reviews do not mention this, Which ultimately precipitated me into buying this book. At 80 dollars full price, that was an expensive mistake. I have also tried to contact the author to no avail. There is a mention on the author's website to contact the publisher to obtain a source/code CD. I called the publisher; they said they will not send the source CD is unless you are an instructor for this course or a certified home school instructor.

Great book for beginners,
This review is from: C++: An Introduction to Computing (2nd Edition) (Textbook Binding)
I was recommended to buy this book when I was doing first course on C++. First time I saw it, I didn't really like it because it looked just like other books on shelves. If you look closely what this book provides, you'll see how worthwhile it is. C++ is huge and it is impossible to learn all of it in one book, however this book does provide most fundamental features of C++ that beginners need to know. Also, the book is not just how to program C++ but it covers good programming pactice and some ideas beyond how to programOne thing most readers should point out is the presentation of the book is really poor. The authors use too many different background and font colours in one page. This is really annoying. If you are a biginner and you don't care about this, it's good investment to buy this book.
