Book Description

September 3, 2004

C# is an object-oriented programming language that is similar to the Java programming language in many respects but more comprehensive and different in most details. This book gives a concise description of C#. It is intended as a guide for readers who know Java and want to learn C# and as a quick reference for anyone who wants to know C# in more detail than that provided by a standard textbook. The final chapter of C# Precisely summarizes the differences between C# and Java.C# Precisely is one of the first books on C# to cover version 2.0. It presents the entire C# 2.0 programming language, including generics, iterators, and anonymous methods. It excludes most of the extensive Microsoft.NET framework class libraries except threads, input/output, and generic collection classes. The book shows general rules on left-hand pages, with corresponding examples on right-hand pages. All examples are fragments of legal C# programs. The complete, ready-to-run example programs are available at the book's Web site.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Blaise Pascal once wrote, 'I have made this letter longer than usual, because I lack the time to make it short.' Peter Sestoft and Henrik Hansen have taken the time to write a short book on C# that leaves nothing out."--Anders Hejlsberg, Microsoft Corporation

More About the Author

I work with program transformation, program analysis, partial evaluation, and the design and implementation of functional and object-oriented languages as well as advanced software libraries.

I'm co-developer of some open source software, including the Moscow ML implementation of Standard ML (since 1993) and the C5 Generic Collection Library for C# and CLI/.NET (since 2001).

When I'm not working with computers, I enjoy reading modern and classic fiction from all over (no scifi, the world is plenty strange as we find it) as well as in-depth analyses on current affairs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding !, July 8, 2005
This review is from: C# Precisely (Paperback)
Instant classic!

This is THE best computer language book I have ever seen in my life!

This book's achievement is unprecedented. Anders Hejlsberg used 432 pages to describe C#, Jesse Liberty spent 672 pages to achieve the same with better accessibility. Make a guess, what are the minimum pages to achieve the same goal? 182 pages!!! 182 pages achieved even higher level of accomplishment than 400-700 pages!

You can't find any useless or meaningless word in this book. If a word is taken from the book, it's not complete. If a word is added, it's too much.

I read the book as if I were reading a collection of beautiful poems, I almost forgot it's a computer book. The language is so fluid that you only feel perfection and harmony, the descriptions are so accurate that it reaches the level of precision as mathematics.

After I finished reading, I noticed that the author lives in Copenhagen, Denmark. I am really astonished by his mastery of English the same as his mastery of C#.

Another excellence of this book I'd like to mention is that:
When the book is opened, the left hand pages give you high precision descriptions of C# constructs and logic, the examples are given on the right hand pages to support and clarify these concepts.

Highly recommended, software engineers and computer scientists will be benefited from this book on multiple aspects.

4.0 out of 5 stars for mostly computational coding in C#; no graphics, June 11, 2006
This review is from: C# Precisely (Paperback)
This book has the same style as Sestoft's companion text, "Java Precisely". Concise explanations, that are perhaps best suited to a programmer already experienced in other languages, but who now wants to learn C#.

You can rapidly pick up the essence of computational coding in C# using the book. The major classes are well treated. Be aware however that for making widgets, you really should consult another text.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and concise. Just perfect., July 13, 2005

A great reference to the C# language, and the fact that almost every (if not all) the left page has an english description of the features and the right page a code example of tha feature. This makes using this book as a reference awesome. Moreover, the examples are very simple and to the point. Excellent resource.
