Just about the only time I was able to force myself to put it down was when I was typing in the examples and modifying the code and creating new programs.

I just bought this book yesterday. I'm finished reading it now. Just about the only time I was able to force myself to put it down was when I was typing in the examples and modifying the code and creating new programs.

I can see how this book would potentially be confusing for someone who is COMPLETELY new to programming and the concept of programming, but if you have any programming experience at all, I encourage you to try this book if you want to become familiar with the basics of C++ very quickly.

It's an excellent book, is fairly fast-paced... skips the "dry" material and gets you actually USING C++ very quickly.

I picked up my copy from Borders locally for $15 + tax... for that amazing price, you can't go wrong with this book. I would have easily paid double.

Well, this book does have some good information and I have learned a fair amount. My problem was that in the first few pages it says "This book makes no assumption that the reader has previous knowledge of any programming language..." yet it jumped right in to using functions and terms that I had to research further to understand fully. I had very little knowledge of programming when I received this book so this made it a little tougher for me to use. But, there is good information here and when used along side Google search and your compiler's help menus you can get through it and learn the basics!

Overall, this book is in "not so easy steps" for those who are complete noobs. Do a little online research as you thumb through the chapters and you will be just fine!

This book on "C Programming" (3rd. Edition) by Mike McGrath is a pleasure to read - at least as far as a software book can be considered a pleasure. These are the reasons:

-- Clear and concise wording. Well organized: Each chapter is divided up into clear sub-topics. Each sub-topic is explained in about a page, followed by a step-by-step example. I find it fairly easy to follow along, since the key concepts are well defined at any given time.

-- The examples are very helpful, and they include outputs from an actual command window. Although a reader will want to have a computer available to experiment with, it's possible to get a good idea of the concept just by studying the provided output and comparing it with the input. The way the examples are written and formatted is perhaps my favorite feature of the book.

-- Excellent job on the layout and formatting of this book. The paper and type is high quality. Nice use of color to help in the organziation of the material. There are just a lot of little features that help make digesting the material easier.

Although I dabble in C#, PHP, SQL and a few others, I've often heard that learning C would be beneficial. I was finally promted to go ahead with it after getting involved with programming an Arduino microcontroller, which is based on C. Although I haven't completed the book, what I've read so far has helped resolve several tasks I had been stumbling on.

There are some errors in the book. As some have noted, most of the errors are fairly obvious by the time they are presented. Most appear to be in the examples. In a way, it is sort of satisfying to uncover the errors as it helps to challenge my understanding. However, I found at least one explanation that was just "wrong".

I found the last review bizarre so I felt I should write a counter balance.

I read thousands of books (and have written 1000s of lines of C) but I am self-taught and occasionally need to move outside of the range I have used in the past. My code is based around trading futures, forex, and stocks using the Sierra Chart program so I started off with what I needed and gradually built out as I needed more. I use the Open Watcom C++ compiler but have used others including MS and earlier pure C compilers.

All of my code is free to other Sierra Chart users so it's well used.

Most of the C and C++ books out there are big, thick and daunting if you're just trying to do xxx, which is a little more than you've done in the past. This one isn't. Its reasonably tight; easy to read; well written and has good indexes to find what you need when you come back a month or so later for a little more.

It improved my knowledge painlessly and the few examples I tried from the book worked fine with my compiler.

I recommend it to anyone.
