I was a little hesitant to purchase C.O.R.E because of the feedback I've gotten at forums but I still took the chance to buy and try it out. I'm glad I did! The game has exciting game play and even though the controls seems a little awkward, the guns were fun to shoot. The only downside to the game is the lack of save points, but everything else is awesome!! I'm trying to get a couple of my other friends to make the purchase so we can play multiplayer together : )

CORE is an FPS for the Nintendo DS. The Nintendo DS is not the best system for first person shooters. It simply lacks the horsepower to pull off a modern FPS. Keeping the NDS's limitations in minds CORE is not a bad game. you can't compare it to FPS's for modern consoles,so if you are looking for advanced AI and super smooth modern graphics you are going to be disappointed, however, if you compare it to lets say N64 shooters then on a technical level it's very impressive. I would say from a PC standpoint it falls somehwhere between the Quake II engine and the Unreal engine.
Technical limitations aside, CORE is a pretty fun game. It's not in the same league as Dementium or Metroid Prime Hunters, but it compares favorably to other shooters like Moon. Since there are very few FPS's for the NDS adn this is a fun game (again, as long as you judge for what it is and the platform it's on) then 25 dollars is not bad. If you don't have Moon, Dementium, MPH or Call of Duty for the DS I suggest you try them first (all are more creative) if you've played those other games out and are looking for something new you will like this too even if it isn't the best techincally (even by DS standards)and doesn't break any new ground in any way. The controls are similar to other FPS's for the DS and work well with the Ds's touch screen. \ If yo are reading this and the price has come down below $20, then you can't go wrong otherwise unless you are a FPS junkie go to Youtube and check out some videos to see if this is for you.

The game is great running at a smooth 60FPS with great graphics. the story is okay but somewhat difficult, and multplayer would have been perfect bigger with maps and online play, but overall it's a fantastic first person shooter for DS

The controls of this game were very hard for me to handle. I really tried but just could not get through the hurdle that the system was for this type of game. Anyway, it may be okay for a RIGHT handed person (which I still doubt), but my being LEFT handed, I was supposed to use the D-pad to move (forward, back, strafe left, strafe right) and the touch screen to aim (right hand in order to turn and aim) with the left forefinger to primary fire and left finger to alternate fire. Switching to Left hand mode swaps sides so you use the buttons as forward, back, strafe left, strafe right which does make it a bit better but still annoying nevertheless. Just to add, I can write legibly with both my left and right hands and yet I still found the controls annoying enough to quite playing and switch back to go-to games like Legend of Kage 2 or Ninja Gaiden. In summary, if you want a 1st person shooter, stick to the consoles (or computers) although I haven't tried the Metroid games so I can't speak for them. Alternatively, maybe there is an adjustment phase because I am used to Xbox controllers with stick controls for shooters although I wouldn't figure because I use the DS frequently with other games. I hope you have better enjoyment than I did.

The year is 2028. The Mojave Desert is the impact site of a massive meteor. Over the next two decades, an underground research facility is built to examine the extraterrestrial origins and the bizarre effects that the meteor is having on the natural environment and the people who come in contact with it. When all communications are lost with the facility, you(as Jason Crane) go into investigate and establish contact once again. Along the way, the mystery begins to unravel and, by the end, you find out just what's causing everything to happen.
Despite critical reviews on the game, It was a pretty decent game to me. I'll admit-it wasn't no Quake, Unreal or Duke Nukem. In fact, in my honest opinion, it was a pretty basic/generic FPS game(kinda like how Dark Arena was for the Gameboy Advance). Lack of save points was my only gripe with the game. Yet, I will have to say that I did have alot of fun playing the game. It did alot of things that you don't normally see in a FPS on the DS(like fully dynamic lighting, particle effects, good enemy AI, full 3D sound, etc)so I have to give props to No Way! for that. It had alot more variety in the enemies that you face than Moon and you could play with up to four players in multiplayer death match, team arena, and capture the flag modes using only one card. Technically, it's a marvel to look at. Do I think you should buy the game or save your money? Well- it was worth what I paid for it if that is any consolation. I rather enjoyed it myself. Besides, FPS games are in low supply on the DS, especially ones like this one.

So, I saw this game was a first person shooter, and I thought it would be pretty cool. Then I got the game. I was horribly disapointed, the graphics are last-gen, the gameplay was okay, not anywhere close to clean cut, the hit detection was pretty iffy, and the weapons were dull. Boss fights were a joke and level design was astoundingly boring. Don't waste your time or money.

If you have played MOON for the DS you will be disappointed with CORE. While CORE has great graphics it lacks the basics to make game play fun and smooth. The mission you are on doesn't make much sense and the lack of a map is very frustrating. You have corridors with lots of doors and few open. It's much like being herded rather than exploring. The text in the game is done in a very hard to read font and when the dialog pops up when a character is speaking, it goes by so fast you almost miss it and there is no back option to read it again. There are save points but they are so random and far between on the lavels, especially the upper levels, that you wind up getting bored. The saving grace for this game, though I haven't tried it yet, maybe the multi-player mode. The multi-player mode does not require all gamers to have a copy of the game, which is nice, and it is supposed to allow free play so all participants can play cooperatively or against one another. This maybe good. I don't yet. Overall my opinion is save your money.

A word of caution to everyone here. Even though it says that Hubbagames has this in stock, I just got an email from them yesterday (7/29/2009), after inquiring when it was going to ship, that the item is in pre-order.
Not real happy about this as it was my son that was crushed to find out that it isn't suppposed to be available until August 15th (after it was supposed to be out on May 15th, then ...). Looks like a really cool game, but either Amazon or Hubbagames is not being upfront about this product. Very disappointing, but something that I'm starting to come to expect with Amazon partners. Hope this helps to prevent someone else being disappointed. When I actually get the game, I'll come back and change this with a real review. |
