A marriage, a murder, and a mole all play relevant roles in the fourth season of CSI: Miami. Easily the most stylistic show in the CSI franchise, the series stars David Caruso (NYPD Blue as Horatio Caine, the lead investigator with the Miami Police Department. With his black clothing, Caine stands out in a sea of pastel-clad colleagues that include ballistics expert Calleigh Dusquene (Emily Procter), underwater recovery whiz Eric Delko (Adam Rodriguez), and medical examiner Alexx Woods (Khandi Alexander). Speaking in an even-keeled tone, Caine's one-liners effortlessly roll off his tongue in the same manner as Law & Order's Lenny Briscoe (Jerry Orbach). When a philandering husband--whose DNA is being collected--excuses his behavior by saying, "So I'm human," Caine zings back, "Yeah, too bad there's not a swab that can confirm that." On the 25 episodes featured in this 7-disc set, he doesn't scream or shout once. When alarmed, Caine lets his gun make his more salient points. Actually, he and the other CSIs seem more proficient with their weapons than the FBI that sometimes "backs" them up. Who needs a sniper when Horatio is there? The generally good-looking cast also spends more time in the field than in the crime lab, giving them plenty of opportunity to bask in the sunshine and mingle with the bikini-clad beauties that seem to populate Miami. Even semi-regular cast member Joel West, who plays a police officer, is a former Calvin Klein model.

The season, which ran during 2005-2006, includes a crossover episode with CSI: New York. Unfortunately, only the Miami segment is included on this set, leaving viewers to wonder what happened in Part 2 when Caine and Mac Taylor (Gary Sinise) team up to capture a serial killer who locks children in the closet while he murders their parents. Still, there are some excellent episodes on this set, including one where a team of scam artists pose as father and children to steal a slew of money from the local country club Richie Riches. Another involves a group of college kids intent on recreating the violence they've played on a Grand Theft Auto-type of videogame. In many ways, this season is more about style than substance. Why else would there be avant-garde subtitles for one sequence where the criminal is speaking perfectly coherent English? More so than in previous seasons, there is a soap opera mentality to the show that's entertaining, but out of place in this series. Horatio is involved in a doomed romance, there's a romantic triangle between colleagues, and all too much is made of a possible mole within the lab who is leaking confidential information. While Caine's whispered threats lend a certain entertaining cachet to the show, his preening gets old fast. When he enters a room, Caine plants himself into a theatrical stance that makes him look less like a tough guy than one of Charlie's Angels. Too bad there's not a swab that can fix that. --Jae-Ha Kim

5.0 out of 5 stars A Break-Through Year, September 18, 2006
By David Solomon (East Brunswick, NJ USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
For the first 3 seasons, CSI: Miami was hindered by occasional clunky and uninteresting crimes and lack of character development.

But in Season 4, this show really takes off by adding subplots that set it apart from the other CSI shows and make the characters more interesting.

You now know Eric Delko has a sister who has cancer that he's helping get pot for. You see Ryan Wolfe's love and dedication to his job through the storyline involving a threat to his eyesight. Even coroner Alexx Woods has a meaty episode in which she's given an opportunity to work with another team.

These storylines are merely a backdrop to the thrilling cliff-hangers the writers/producers cooked up for this year: the identity of the mole in the lab and the continuing war against the Mala Noches.

All of these arcs are so well-handled that you'll be on the edge of your seat until the final episode of this season.

5.0 out of 5 stars CAINE IS STILL ABLE, November 5, 2006
By Michael Butts (Martinsburg, WV USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
This fourth season of the flashiest of the CSI franchises is packed with a lot of personal dilemmas squeezed in with the usual vicious crimes. David Caruso's cool Horatio has to deal with the return of serial killer Walter Resden; a romance with Eric's cancer-stricken sister; and the possible closedown of his lab. Emily Procter's lovely Caleigh finds herself discovering a few things about her Federal agent boyfriend and dealing with an incompetent replacement (Joshua Leonard) in the firearms division; Adam Rodriguez's Eric is ridden with financial problems, his ill sister and possible drug charges; Khandi Alexander's stoic coroner Alexx finds herself in the middle of the murder of a known pedophile, and possibly losing her job because she's doctored Ryan on the sly; and Jonathan Togo's Ryan finds himself injured in a confrontation with a killer and possibly losing his eyesight. Whew! It's all done in typical CSI fashion and I am a big fan of these shows, so I loved it. The crimes are all fascinating and the technical aspects right up there. If you like CSI MIAMI, you'll love this great season.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good mysteries but bad character arcs. Chaotic Season 4 of CSI Miami, August 4, 2006
CSI:Miami, having evolved with some pains over the first three seasons, dips in quality in Season 4 after a very solid 3rd Season. Anyone who has watched the show realizes that Horatio, unlike Gil Grissom or Mac Taylor, is the true star of the show. The rest of the CSIs are entertaining, but the show is truly about him. This dynamic, when combined with the glamour and glitz of the Miami setting and crimes most foul, make this an entertaining CSI and reportedly the most watched show in the world.

Plotwise, season 4 gets too involved in personal character arcs to the detriment of the enjoyable crimes and mysteries. Horatio has a bizarre relationship and marriage with Delco's sister, a mole infiltrates CSI Miami, and the Mala Noche gang picks a fight that carries over into the fifth season and causes a death to someone close to Caine. These arcs were handled poorly, especially the storyline of the Mole, which when revealed was utterly anti-climactic, especially considering the Mole will be a series regular in Season 5.

Emily Proctor and Rex Linn continue to shine as Calleigh and Detective Frank Tripp. Adam Rodriguez has a sleepwalking performance as Delco, and Jonathan Togo as Ryan Wolfe does little to distinguish himself from Gregg Sanders on the Vegas cast. David Caruso continues his acting by mannerisms technique, perfecting the hands on hip move, the put on the sunglasses technique, the dramatic...pauses...every...four...syllables style that has made him the great scene chewing overactor of the year. Watching Caruso is a drinking game's worth of entertainment.

The extras of Season 4 are a bit pedestrian, with some audio commentaries, and three featurettes covering show production from shooting to post-production. If you are a fan of the show you will pre-order this one, those who don't like this CSI will be happy to know that Vegas and NYC come out within 30 days of this release.
