C.T.Studd--Norman Grubb,
By Charles Hamilton Sr. "The Bookworm of Humming... (LaPlata, Maryland) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: C. T. Studd: Cricketer & Pioneer (Paperback)
This book describes a man who gave up a mansion to rival any in England in his day, and a life replete with luxuary and every convenience; to accept a call from God to go to the deepest, most remote African jungle and live in a decrepit, dilapidated shack. He kept his charge and remained in service there even after his beloved wife took sick and had to return home. They only saw each other on two occasions during their entire remaining years after her return to England.
If you think you have experienced times of personal sacrifice, you will get a degree of measurement from this man's life. C.T. Studd "puts the rubber to the road," so to speak.A well written story of devotion to and for God. Must reading for those looking for inspiration and direction in making important decisions in your life. Great book, about an even greater man. Charles Hamilton Sr, Former Executive Director Northwest Teen Challenge, author of From Darkness To Light and A Step Of Faith. [...]From Darkness To Light

The Cricketer & Pioneer sets off telling the story how how C.T. Studd was possibly one of the greatest players ever of the game Cricket. Since I am not familiar with the game of Cricket, it seemed quite trivial to me. It helped me place into perspective today's sports heroes. The rest of the book walks with C.T. through the mission field in China and Africa. The book is not what one would call an "easy read", the language is a bit antiquated and unfamiliar, but that is a part of the charm of the book. My favorite quote from the book was, "Christ wants not nibblers of the possible, but grabbers of the impossible."

More than a cricket player...,

...which is a good thing, since I don't (and don't care to) know about the sport. The testimony of Studd, his many mission fields, how he proposed to his future wife, the circumstances of his death, are great reading and an inspiration to all Christians.

A great biography! A great cricket player who gave his life whole-heartedly to the Lord and was greatly used by Him. I don't know much about cricket, but I like sports, and really enjoyed and was challenged by this book!

Great missionary biography,
By Mike Pettengill (La Ceiba, Honduras) - See all my reviews
This review is from: C. T. Studd: Cricketer & Pioneer (Paperback)
This biography of missionary C.T. Studd was written by Norman Grubb in 1933. Grubb was a missionary to Belgian Congo and was the son-in-law of C.T. Studd. While the subject is amazing the writing style is choppy and difficult to follow.
Studd, born in 1860, was one of the best cricket players in the world. He abruptly walked away from a promising athletic career and became a Christian missionary. While some missionaries are content with one difficult assignment Studd accepted three. He served in China for 15 years, India for six years and the final 20 years of his life in Africa. He realized as a young man that his life was to be one of simple, childlike faith and that his part was to trust and not to do. He was to trust in God and God would work through him. Many said he was making a huge mistake to bury himself in missions. They pointed out the influence he could have with young men in his own country. He asserts that the devil must have used a similar argument to Moses. He once said, "If Jesus Christ be God and died for me, then no sacrifice can be too great for me to make for Him." This is clearly how he lived his life. His life will be an eternal rebuke to easy-going Christianity. He has demonstrated what it means to follow Christ without counting the cost and without looking back.

this book is about a man of faith. thats all i really need to say, but to think of the positive, sure hope He had in God and the love he had for others....truly amazing. Interesting little aspect of faith in this book about his approach in pursuing a wife. rather challenging to the emotionally guided people of today.....

Truly a great account of a man who was used of God. If you are saved you need to read this book. Praise God for desiring to use men, and for loving the whole world ... giving his son to die for all of mans sin. Jesus saves and this shows in C.T. Studds life
