Product Description

Digital Visual Interface (DVI) is the standard interface for high-performance connection between PCs and flat panel displays, CRT displays, projectors, and HDTV. This video adapter is fully compliant with the DVI standard defined by DDWG (Digital Display Working Group). The DVI-I configuration adapts an existing VGA cable for use with a DVI-I device. Maximum resolution is UXGA (1600 pixels x 1200 pixels). Gold-plated contacts provide full conductivity with no data loss. PC- and Mac-compatible cable supports hot-plugging of DVI display devices. Connector 1: DVI-I 17-pin Female (Analog Only). Connector 2: HD15 Male. Please Note: This adapter is for DVI-I ports only, and will not fit a digital DVI-D cable.

This adapter is fine for the particular use it can handle, connecting DVI-I cable to PC's vga outlet.

There are basically two types of DVI cable and connectors. DVI-D and DVI-I.

DVI-I cable and connectors have 4 extra pins, which carry an analogue signal. The analogue signal is compatible with VGA. This adapter will let a DVI-I connect to and work with VGA socket.

A DVI-D cable/connector is digital only and carries no analogue signal so won't work with VGA no matter what adapter you use.

You can tell DVI-I from DVI-D by looking at the plug. I will have two rows of pins and a flat blade. If there are two pins above and two pins below the blade, then that's DVI-I. If the blade has no pins above and below, that's DVI-D.

Knowledge of DVI is very helpful when selecting an adapter. Many other reviewers have correctly stated that no adapter like this will ever convert A (analog) to D (digital) or D to A. DVI connectors and cables come in different flavors that carry digital (DVI-D), analog (DVI-A), or both (DVI-I, which this item is). VGA is always analog. Google has a helpful guide here: [...]. This shows the difference with pictures, so you can look at the output of your video card/console and the input to your monitor/TV to know what you have. Also, you might be wanting this adapter to re-use an old DVI cable you have lying about. Check that too, because a DVI-D cable that's only for digital will nicely plug in to this DVI-I adapter, but will not carry an analog signal to the display. This is where I went wrong - I knew my GTX-260 card put out analog (DVI-I), and my LCD TV is analog, but did not check my cable which is DVI-D. Doh! Check all your stuff out before ordering, or you might be disappointed and want to leave these poor guys a 1-star review.

People are complaining because they just assume if you get an adapter like this it will work no matter work. First you need to understand that VGA out on a laptop or desktop, will ONLY work as VGA. VGA is an analog signal, therefore will only work with an analog cable. DVI is a digital signal, and therefore only carries a digital signal. What people seem to fail to understand is that a simple adapter does not work when converting an analog signal to digital; you need a special converter for something like this to work they way so many want it to.

It looks (and sounds) like this adapter works ONLY when your signal is coming in from DVI and going out to VGA. It DOES NOT seem to work when you try going in from VGA and going out to DVI. I bought it for the latter purpose and was disappointed also.

Adapter worked right about of the box, came black, not blue, but color didnt matter. Works good for my ps3, I used a hdmi to dvi cable, and then this adapter which was dvi to vga since my lcd screen is vga only. Works like a charm and 1080p looks nice!

I'm thinking C.DelSol just didn't switch displays on his laptop. By default laptops only have a video signal to the built-in screen. There usually is a FN key combination to turn on the external video port.

I'm posting here to hopefully prevent others from making the same mistake I did. As other posts mention this is obviously only for connecting a DVI out computer to a VGA in monitor. However, there are multiple versions of DVI. Some are analog only (DVI-A), some are digital only (DVI-D) others are Both (DVI-I). This adapter only works with DIV-A and DVI-I. All HDMI is digital only so it will not work with any HDMI to DVI cable. Three stars because Amazon really should put this information at the top of the screen in plain English and not bury it farther down the page in technical jargon.
Because I should have read the fine print, I'll eat the cost and not ask for a refund.

I know there are some people out there that might be able to use this item, but trust me, the vast majority of people who look at this product will not be able to use it and should NOT purchase it. Two caveats:

(1) Just because the adapter looks correct for your set-up (ie, right configuration and correct male/female set up) does NOT mean it will work with your digital equipment.
(2) This ONLY works with analog to analog. Although this looks like DVI-D (digital), and most people think of DVI as only a digital input/output (I know I did), there is actually a DVI analog that looks just like DVI-D. So unless you are one of a handful of people who needs to link via a DVI port but know you are only going to send/receive an analog signal, you should not purchase this. This product can't "convert" any signal from an analog to a digital format.

I had read many of the other bad reviews that discussed some of this, but they were unclear enough I thought I was covered. Turns out the other bad reviews were right. It may be "cheap" enough to take a risk (as I thought), but basically you are probably buying a product you won't be able to use.
