Product Description

There are times you may have an external device, such as a portable 2.5"" hard drive, and a standard USB cable is not able to transfer enough power to operate the device. This problem can be easily solved by using our USB 2.0 ""Y"" Cables. Simply plug this cable's USB Mini-B end into the device and the two USB A ends into open USB ports on a single PC or Mac. The cable then pulls power from both USB ports, increasing the output to the external drive. The cable features a red molded hood for the auxiliary USB A connector, allowing the user to easily distinguish between main and auxiliary power. Foil and braid shielding reduces EMI/RFI interference and a twisted-pair construction helps reduce crosstalk, ensuring high-speed, error-free data transfer. This cable is compatible with USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 specifications.

It's exactly what they describe.

Funny thing... I did an Amazon search for a Western Digital USB 2.0 Power Booster Cable (Model: WDCA029RNN), and this is what came up. Only 'after' ordering did I realize that the description of the item was a 6 foot cable, which would have been too long a power cable for my needs. I received the cable, and it was exactly what I had intended to purchase - about 2 feet; and works perfectly!

I have a Verbatim 160GB portable hard drive that would not power up. The unit kept flashing, but would not initialize. After researching I found that my older desktop PC was not providing enough power to the drive through only one USB connection. This particular type of cable was suggested as a solution to the problem. Some reviewers have said that the cable did not work properly, but in my application the hard drive powered up and performed flawlessly. A very easy, inexpensive fix for a vexing problem!

I bought these as extra cables for my Seagate FreeAgent Go drive. They work fine without any problems. At least on my computers with my setup, I haven't had to use the "power only" USB plug. But I got it to be safe rather than sorry should I ever need it on someone else's computer.

Downside: cables are stiff and not as flexible as I would have liked. They are somewhat awkward because of their stiffness, but still usable in a pinch.

Caution: I suspect that many reviewers in fact purchased a different product, and their complaints refer to other brands and other models of Y-cables.

The Cables-to-Go brand model 28107 Y-cable works well for the purpose, the quality is good, and the USB connectors fit well.

As described, the cable is about 6' long---but that isn't as long as it sounds---measure how much cable you'll need before buying one. 5' to 6' is ideal for me. But since the whole point is maximum power, you want to keep the cables as short as possible. 3' Y-cables are available, and would be preferred, if you can use such a short cable--for example with a portable computer. Try not to use extension USB cables or adapters with a Y-cable---there will be a little loss of power with each connector.

The long arm (with the mini-B connector which plugs into your hard drive, or DVD drive, or scanner) is almost 5 feet long. Each of the short arms are about 1 foot long, for a total spread of up to 2 feet and so, should reach USB ports even on the opposite sides of some portable computers. Of the short arms, one is red and labeled "power only"; the black one is power and data. For most users, it doesn't matter which USB plug plugs into which of your computer's USB ports, as long as both are plugged DIRECTLY into your computer's ports. If you happen to have both fast and slow ports---use the black plug in a fast port.

Since the whole point of using a Y-cable is maximum power, avoid using spitters with Y-cables. If your computer has only two USB ports, it would be okay to use a splitter for a USB mouse (or other data only or low power device) and the red plug of the Y-cable. If you need more full-power ports, a powered splitter (that has its own little transformer which plugs into an AC outlet) may be a solution. Even so, try to always plug the black plug directly into one of your computer's USB ports.

I used to have a very short usb Y cable that came with my Simpletech external hard drive. But I accidentally threw it out leaving me with no cable. I could have just bought a regular USB cable but I figured the hard dive came with a Y cable for a reason. So I bought one of these and it powered up my hard drive just fine. Sure it can be bulky since it's over six feet long but I can actually put the drive on my desk instead of on the floor like I had to do in the past. I would recommend this type of cable over a regular cable anytime.

The Y-cable does exactly what it's designed to do. It provides supplemental USB power to my portable hard drive. My old Dell needs all the help it can get, and this cable delivers.

Item came as described, although there was no mention of how long the cables were after the split. Unfortunately, due to the fact that the two USB ports are on opposite sides of the 15" PowerBook G4, it's not the solution for me. I can only access one USB port at a time...therefore, not enough power to run my external hard drive.
