1.0 out of 5 stars Very poor printing style seriously affects book's usefulness, August 31, 1999
By A Customer

I received this book from Amazon.com today and I will be returning it. Each page of this book contains at least two illustrations of Linux screen displays. This could be very useful but unfortunately the printing is blue words on a blue background. This makes it almost impossible to read except with a magnifying glass. It's very similar to the printing used by credit card issuers who don't want you to understand their disclosure statements. Too bad.

1.0 out of 5 stars If you're reading this review, this book is not for you, May 10, 2000

This review is from: CALDERA OPENLINUX 2.2 FAST & EASY (Paperback)
I was amazed at this thing--every page has two screenshots, with little arrows pointing to where you're supposed to click. So just in case you've been asleep the past 15 years and have never seen or used a GUI--AND, if you need to have every little detail explained to you, this book is just fine. Go ahead and buy it.

But for everyone else, this book is a huge waste of paper. It's too simple-minded for kids, who know better than to read a book to learn how to experience things. It's also too simple-minded for grownups who just never got around to doing computing. I'd give this book to someone I didn't like, who I wanted to insult.

At least it's not overly long.

I don't mean to be harsh: the authors did a creditable job of explaining how to do such fundamental stuff--it's like trying to write a book about how to walk. The concept just seems really stupid to me.
