Book Description

When he is eight years old Reuben Sykes kills his abusive father in a remote cabin in the mountains of Virginia. Although the act brings with it a sense of tremendous relief, Reuben takes no pleasure in it. The subsequent murder of his sister, though, is an entirely different matter. When done, in fact, his only regret is that he can't kill her all over again.

Sixty-four years later, when four year old Sophie Crandall is abducted from her grandfather's home in rural Maine, the ensuing investigation brings answers no one, least of all the police, are prepared to hear.

A roller-coaster ride of a book that will thrill you, shock you, and, ultimately leave you with a sense of dread.
Amazon Reader Reviews:
"Tragedy begets horror in this unrelenting tale of serial murder. Dakin does a wonderful job of keeping his readers hoping for relief while he weaves tragedy, hope, love, hatred, and brutality into a masterwork worth reading."
"If you enjoy a good thriller, I don't think you'll be disappointed in this one."
"Authors characters are hypnotic and powerful, thus producing a riveting story."
"My wife and I both thought this book was great. Good plot, lots of suspense."
"Exceptional. One of the best I have read and I read several a week."
"One of the best books I have read in a long time!"
"The characters are strong and are backed by a solid plot. Just don't think you have figured everything out until you read the last page."
"You are a brilliant writer. I hope you never stop giving us a part of you."

Editorial Reviews

From the Author

This was my first novel and took quite a number of years to complete. That was due in part to my inexperience as a writer, of course, but also to the fact that the story delves deeply into the lives of the main characters. Many people have told me that they loved this book for the very reason that they came to know the characters so well.
If you enjoy this book look for the sequels, A SHADOW FELL and THE SHADOW'S EDGE, books 2 and 3 of the 'Shadow Trilogy.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved this book February 27, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I usually like to read books based on other peoples reviews and this book had none. But after reading the little mini synopsis, I thought I'd give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. It grabbed my attention from the first chapter and never let go. The author did a great job of character development, I felt like I really knew them all. The books goes back and forth in time, in order to figure things out, but it is not distracting or confusing at all. And the ending was superb! Excellent book and I would like to read more from this author. Give it a try.

A friend recommended this book to me. Not my usual genre, but I really enjoyed it! It was a real page turner keeping me up at night to find out what happened next. I felt invested in the characters. I've already recommended this book to my friends and I'm looking forward to reading another of Patrick Dakin's books!

3.0 out of 5 stars Came a Shadow November 7, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Although the first half of the book kept my interest, the story then became repetitive as the characters reiterated the information over and over again. The story also left me with some questions: why would a wife, and a best friend stick with a man they suspected of being a murderer? Why would one of the hero's "nice" family spend holidays with a person they suspected to be a murderer? Had more questions too. I found myself turning pages alright, skimming to get through it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Compelling reading September 30, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
At first, I thought this was a rather ordinary tale. However, as I read on, I discovered it was absolutely riveting. It's a great twist to see what happens to a child to turn him into a monster, and where his monstrous compulsions bring him. This is thoroughly enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful and thoroughly intriguing! October 13, 2013

This book made me feel like I knew every character personally. What a fantastic way of weaving this story from past to present, then back and forth again. It helped you to understand Reuben's darkness but in no way made you like him. What a creepy story that just grabbed me and whirled me from the Great Depression to WWII to present and with such ease and understanding. I never felt confused by the time changes...the author made the transitions easily and expertly. It's scary to think how devious Reuben was/is and how long it was before his true nature was discovered. What a fantastic book!

2.0 out of 5 stars I finished it but it certainly wasn't thrilling! December 16, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book was really choppy in how it was organized. It starts with one family losing their daughter, and goes on for quite a while. Then it jumps to the biography of the killer as though it were a totally different book. Finally it tied it together, but very awkwardly!
