5.0 out of 5 stars Get this for one track, January 16, 2002

Despite the fact that 10,000 Maniacs have rarely released a bad song, get this single for "Sally Ann", which is one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard. Natalie's beautiful voice and Rob's amazing guitar playing are just two reasons why this song is so good. All of the other tracks are great, but "Sally Ann" makes this single worth getting.

5.0 out of 5 stars Legacy of great cover versions., May 5, 2000
This review is from: Candy Everybody Wants (Audio CD)
I bought this CD because of the very rare Morrissey cover -- which is outstanding- and I found it spinning and sinning on my CD player. This CD is a solid collection of covers and all have the special Merchant/Maniacs seal, wiothout relinquishing any of their originality. A must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great single to add to your collection..., January 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Candy Everybody Wants (Audio CD)
Even if you aren't a diehard 10,000 Maniacs fan, I think you will still appreciate this single. I love every song on this single and I must of played it hundreds of times (easy to do when there are only 4 tracks). I don't have a favorite song from this CD, but I have never seen the cover Sally Ann on any other single or album like I have with the other songs. I'm not sure why because I think Sally Ann is just as good as the other tracks.

4.0 out of 5 stars 10,000 Maniacs melancholy cover CD, February 11, 1999

10,000 Maniac's cover of REM's "Don't Go Back To Rockville" is worth the price of this single alone. The band offers an upbeat version of the classic, with Merchant's voice sounding full of melancholy and sorrow. This is the only cover i've ever heard that is actually better than the original!!! The title track, "Candy Everybody Wants" is also a delight....The only thing missing is the band's cover of Tom Waits' "I Hope That I Don't Fall In Love With You" which was available on the CASSETTE single, no longer made That was probably the band's greatest cover song....Check this out for their cover of Morrissey's "Everyday Is Like Sunday"

4.0 out of 5 stars A reward here for the single buyer, March 29, 1999
By A Customer

This effort actually rewards you with something other than an unplugged version of a done to death radio song. You get a couple of interesting covers. Nothing to write home about if you're a fan of the original artists (Morrissey and R.E.M.), but worth it all the same to here Natalie Merchant's awesome voice applied to a couple of 80's alternative favourites.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gem!, July 13, 2000

This is packed with three cover tunes that show just what the Maniacs are capable of. In fact, it could be argued that their cover of "Don't Go Back To Rockville" is better than REM's orignal recording. "Sally Ann" is haunting with echoing guitar stylings from Rob Buck and a lovely viola part from Mary Ramsey. She also plays a fine violin on Morrisey's "Everyday is Like Sunday," which again, gives the original version a run for it's money. These songs are as good as any on "Our Time In Eden." Don't miss this little sonic treat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great EP, April 9, 2011

I would always love something by 10,000 Maniacs, but this is a really good EP. Natalie's voice and the guitarist/vocalists Mark Liuzzo and Paul Liuzzo bell tones on the strings make "Rockville" a tremendous fresh take on an REM classic. Thanks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Natalie Merchant is a great vocalist, October 17, 2010

and of course a great songwriter, along with her band 10,00 maniacs they really know how to make intellectual music that can appeal to everyone. It's interesting how they fuse serious subject matter with such beautiful melodies. Sometimes the music and lyrics tend to be totally opposites but somehow they work great together. This has a few non-album tracks, so I'd definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to complete their maniacs or merchant collections. But the additional songs are pretty great too. so it would be fun for anyone to listen to.

I bought this album specifically to get their rendition of REM's "Don't Go Back to Rockville". But every song on here is good. ("Candy Everbody Wants" is probably the weakest song on the disc.)

Enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars What an under rated Band, November 8, 2008

This review is from: CANDY EVERYBODY WANTS CD UK ELEKTRA 1993 (Audio CD)
The tracks on this import is slightly different to the non-import one (ASIN: B000002I0W). There is a track on the non-import version called Sally-Anne which this album does not have.

I have never heard of this album until recently when a friend was going through his CD collection and was throwing out CD's he no longer listens to and this one just happened to be amongst them. Great production .. great band ... very upbeat jazzy rendition of "Candy Everybody Wants". Two tracks i had never heard before .. Everyday is Like Sunday & Don't Go Back to Rockville. Natalie with her superb vocals executes these in typical Natalie style .. meaning you won't be dissapointed. I don't believe this is available anymore as it is "out of print" so to speak. But it should be a must have for every die hard 10,000 Maniac fans.
