Editorial Reviews

Review

"A great number of women who have been sexually abused and who cope by engaging in self-injurious behavior also cope by writing poetry. The genre of therapeutic poetry is often gut-wrenching, emotional, provocative, and tragic. The poems in CAPTIV transcend the usual therapeutic poetry stereotype in that they are truly poetic." -- Armando Favazza, M.D., author of Bodies Under Siege

"Gripping, pointed, witty, succinct, and page-turning. CAPTV is one of the best anthologies of trauma/recovery poetry that we have come across." -- Karen Conterio and Wendy Lader, Ph.D., Co-Directors of the S.A.F.E. Alternatives Program, authors of Bodily Harm: The Breakthrough Treatment Program for Self-Injurers

This remarkable book of poems weds the wit of Oscar Wilde and that of the best of the New Yorker punchlines to the deepest psychoanalytic depths in this extensive and autobiographical account of a variously abused and systematically undermined childhood. -- John R. Seeley, sociologist & psychoanalyst, author of The Americanization of the Unconscious and Crestwood Heights

About the Author

The author is a writer, artist and activist who hopes that through sharing her art work and healing journey she may contribute to efforts to further understand, prevent and heal from child abuse and its legacy of consequence.

These consequences negatively affect many other aspects of human life on the planet, including environmental, social, and political. The use and misuse of power and responsibility are first learned in early life, and as is too often the case, must be relearned if humanity is to survive at all, and perhaps ultimately, to evolve.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insightful & Inspiring, December 10, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: CAPTIV (Paperback)
CAPTIV is a very accessible book about S. Marie's healing journey through child abuse, its painful and challenging consequences, and the light she creates at the end of the tunnel. The author's extraordinary gift is to say so much about her experience, with tremendous insight, in so few words.

This book should be required reading, not only for every psychologist, therapist and university psychology student, but for every parent. For after reading this book, few parents could possibly perpetrate on their innocent child, the devastating damage that results from physical, emotional and sexual abuse.

Buy this book. You will see the world in a new way, and be better for it.
