Cardio for Metal-heads,
By PennyKF (NY, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CARDIO FOR INDIE ROCKERS (DVD)
Clearly I don't have the same definition of "indie rock" as the people who made this video. All of the songs were heavy metal and alt-rock, which is not really my thing.
That aside, the cardio aspect was a bit discombobulated. I ended up working up a pretty decent sweat, but the instructor and back-up girls weren't always good at explaining/demonstrating the transitions. It's a fun idea, but ultimately I think I'll stick to real workouts, like Jillian Michaels & Tae Bo etc.

Pros: The instructor, Chaos, didn't jabber on and on like most exercise instructors.
Their look was a nice change from the normal-looking ladies in spandex. The work-out is good for BEGINNERS. Cons: Not very challenging. I don't think you could get in really good shape just by doing this a few times a week. The camera work sucked. The cameraman seemed more concerned with zooming up on their "assets" rather than staying at a good angle, so you could see what was going on. I recommend the Yoga for Indie Rockers DVD over this one.

I was excited about getting a workout that looked like it was going to be different from all the rest. Cueing is terrible, proper form is barely discussed, poorly produced and the routine doesn't seem to be well thought out. I have not tried her other dvds, but based on this one I'll be saving my money.

NOT indie music,

This music would not be categorized as "indie rock" by most people. Indie rock generally refers to college rock or post-punk or garage rock on independent labels (think sub-pop, matador, rough trade), not this metal crap. The concept seemed cool, as most workout DVDs have very lame techno or hip hop music, but I am disappointed by the actual product. Also - the instructor looks more like a suicide girl, not an indie music fan. I'd expect someone a little more...IDK, artsy & bohemian.

I have been using Yoga and Pilates for Indie Rockers consistently for over a year now and I still was not prepared for the rigors of this video. The video is about 40 minutes long. The first 20 min is basic step cardio/dance aerobics, which in my opinion was pretty standard. The next 5-7 min. are devoted to butt and leg work, then another 5-7 min. for ab work and the last several min. used for stretching.
Chaos is not as vocal or straight forward as in the previous videos about each of the moves but the workouts were very strenuous and almost too difficult for me to do. It is going to take some getting used to doing the leg and ab work as well as getting coordinated with the dance aerobics. Still a great video and I recommend it for those serious about strength and endurance. And the music is still really good too!

You simply cannot go wrong,

This dvd (can we please get it on vinyl?) is just perfect for people who are indie. (That's slang for fans of the Indiana Jones movies) First of all it allows you to retain all forms of indie cred when working out. Second, not too many people have heard about this so you don't have to worry about it becoming mainstream. And lastly, Pitchfork would totally approve so that makes it safe to like.
Unfortunately for me, I'm not really indie per say. I'm more of a proto-punk, quasi-post country, fluffycore, elf rocker. Hopefully there will soon be a workout video that appeals more to my taste. Anyway if you're a fan of the Indy movies, live in Indianapolis, or are in anyway an independant kind of person then you should definitely pick this up.

I have and LOVE "Pilates for Indie Rockers" and "Yoga for Indie Rockers" so I was delighted to see a new one coming out for cardio. But imagined my surprise when I started it and saw that Chaos, the instructor, had gained a significant amount of weight. I have no objections to different body sizes but I do prefer my fitness instructors to display a certain body type and the well-defined musculature of the previous two videos was absent in the newest one. I didn't think the workout was as challenging as the previous ones and am somewhat disappointed in what I considered to be a fun and unusual series. I recommend it for those just beginning a fitness program but not for anyone seeking a challenge. Maybe roller derby has just worked me too hard.
