Alfredo Casella (1883-1947) was a semi-major Italian pianist and composer who is in danger of falling into total obscurity. May this disc help rescue him? Casella's style in these pieces ranges from Chopinesque to reminisces of Ravel, Bartók (whom he paraphrases at least twice), and Hindemith. The set of Nine Pieces has real substance and great variety; the Children's Pieces reveal Casella's characteristic wit; and the Studies are quite exciting. Ballerini's playing has all the sensitivity, flair, and color you would want, and when required he plays with tremendous rhythmic drive. This disc is a real find for lovers of 20th-century piano music. --Leslie Gerber

Alfredo Casella's piano oeuvre is well rendered here with several sets of gorgeous readings. Echoes of the fin de siecle stretch to the fascisti. Casella's work is indeed sliding into obscurity and this disc is well worth a listen so go ahead and reward your ears.
