Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Between 1921 and 1925, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed 31 songs set to texts from Shakespeare plays. They are virtually unknown, yet each one is a little gem, as the present recital bears out. One does not turn to this composer for confrontational originality but for his elegant craftsmanship, unforced lyricism, tangy harmonic twists, and keen ear for word-setting. Soprano Anne Victoria Banks sings best when the dynamics are scaled down but is less adroit in her higher register, where her normally excellent pitch tends to wobble at climactic moments. William Wellborn's expertly shaded, idiomatic accompaniments seem a tad prominent in the mix. In the main, an ideal disc for singers and song lovers alike who seek effective 20th-century repertoire that lies off the proverbial beaten track. --Jed Distler

5.0 out of 5 stars Very beautiful 20th century Shakespeare April 9, 1999
Format:Audio CD
We have no idea what the music to the songs in Shakespeare's plays sounded like (with a few exceptions), so the question of authenticity has nothing to do with this lovely program of 31 songs from the plays filtered through the genius of this composer in much the same way that Villa-Lobos gave us Bach in a 20th century Brazilian transformation. Students of the vocal repertory will love this program and lovers of Shakespeare will be at the very least interested. By all means compare these versions of with those sung by Alfred Deller on a recent Vanguard Classics release--but one does not replace the other. A wonderful present for your Music or English teacher, by the way.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not sound July 30, 2002

Format:Audio CD
Wrong notes everywhere. Not particularly musical. The only good thing is having the opportunity to hear all the songs. They are glorious.
