A great weekend read! I was hooked from the first page, intrigued by the descriptions of the various characters and amused by the differing urban dialects.
Mr. Welling's dry, matter of fact humour is quite addictive and I felt his description of young boys growing up in war-torn London, while being poignant and in places sad, it was told with such realism and an acceptance that the youth of that time would have had. A murder with a difference is how i would describe this well-crafted novella, that keeps you wondering which of its many colourful characters are the perpetrator.
' Reminiscent of The Sullivans or No.96

Put together a shocking case of arson, plus a cast of quite believable characters in London and the Midlands, add a mysterious cat, and you have the setting for Dave Welling's novella. I found this an enjoyable page turner because the author describes the locations and people in an authentic manner that brings the book to life. I liked the occasional touches of "Black Country" humour, and would rate it an intriguing who-dunit that kept me guessing until the final pages. An entertaining and enjoyable read that also lets the reader know which Midland pubs could be rather dodgy to have a beer at.
