This review is from: CBS Jazz Masterpieces 3 Sampler (Audio CD)
Printed on low-grade paper, the 12-page booklet accompanying this CD reissue of COLUMBIA JAZZ MASTERPIECES SAMPLER VOLUME THREE references the albums these songs are from, plus others used in the series.

All selections mono, unless otherwise indicated.

PROGRAM--

[5:46] DR. JEKYLL - Miles Davis Sextet (Miles, Nat 'Cannonball' Adderley, John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, 'Philly' Joe Jones)
(Stereo) The initial track from their first studio effort is a searing bop swing of exquisite quality.

[3:10] LESTER LEAPS IN - Count Basie orchestra
Prime Basie is compromised by surprisngly lo-fidelity transfer (the hi-hat's nearly missing), and an abundance of 78 rpm surface anomalies.

[4:10] MY HEART STOOD STILL - Erroll Garner trio
From his first COLUMBIA effort (1950), Garner's magnificent solo at the top leads to some leisurely improvs, then bass and brushes enter for an upbeat but straight peroration.

[2:56] CLARINET A LA KING - Benny Goodman orchestra
Pre-WWII Goodman, and the title track of what was originally a two-LP "Masterpieces" set.

[3:13] ECHOES OF HARLEM - Cootie Williams
An LP copy of a 1930s side has enough 33 1/3 rpm crackle and surpressed pops to be noticeable.

[2:59] WHOLLY CATS - Charlie Christian
Big band dance bop cribs some of Basie's "One O'Clock Jump" solo. An early electric guitar side, again with surface noise, but there's a bit more high end.

[5:31] HOW LONG HAS THIS BEEN GOING ON? - Ben Webster & Harry 'Swets' Edison
{Stereo) From a 1962 reunion album, Ben (sax) and 'Sweets' (trumpet) make a great duo.

[6:34] THE MOOCHE - Duke Ellington orchestra
Reworking of a circa-1930 Ellington composition, this interesting 1952 take features two clarinets: one closely miked and the second a good echoey distance removed as it responds to each statement.

[12:34] MILES - Miles Davs Quintet (Miles, Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Tony Williams, Wayne Shorter)
(Stereo) A 1963 hi-speed free jazz live performance that was previously unreleased. In the last minute, someone (Miles?) speaks encouragement and lobbies for applause.

TOTAL TIME: 46:53
