More About the Author

Ron Gilster was born in Vallejo, California in 1947. Which is the last time he actually lived in any one place for very long at all. Ron began his computing and technology career in 1965 in the Air Force, in which he took refuge from the draft, but ended up a Vietnam vet anyway. Over the years, he has been a punch-card machine operator, a computer programmer, a systems analyst, a database manager, a manufacturing production manager, a consultant for what was then a Big 8 accounting firm, an executive in the audio/visual and telecommunications industry, a college instructor and administrator, and, oh yes, a writer.

Ron has had a number of best-selling books, including his first "A+ Certification for Dummies," "CCNA For Dummies," "Cisco Networking For Dummies," and a dozen more. He lives in Spokane, WA and continues to write at least four books per year; the latest being "MCAS: Exam Guide."

1.0 out of 5 stars CCDA written by Dummies, October 27, 2002
By
"rob_cole96" (Tampa, Florida) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCDA for Dummies (Paperback)
This book is bad, and I don't mean in a good way. The book is missing a lot of details, and if you have any knowledge the mistakes will jump out at you. For example, on page 44 it gives the OSI model (from 1-7) as Physical, Data Link, Transport, Network, Session, Presentation, Application. Then, it says make sure you know the correct order for the test. Why? The authors don't. On another question, the book says you should answer, "I don't know because you haven't taught me, yet." Try answering a question on the CCDA exam, as I don't know it's beyond the scope of the test. Also, the editor must have just used the spell check and not actually read the book. There are a lot of errors like "form" for "from" and "wit" for "with." You can figure out what they are trying to say, but it is annoying and makes you lose your focus on studying. I do not recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough stuff, but I think I get it..., April 12, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: CCDA for Dummies (Paperback)
I really like this book. It covers a lot of ground, but I never felt like I got lost. The material was direclty applicable to both the certification exam, though nothing is perfect. I also think it makes a good "general" networking reference.

Defintely a keeper!

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the latest version of the Cisco Test, March 12, 2006
This review is from: CCDA for Dummies (Paperback)
I'm sure this was a pretty good book - but don't order it unless you want to study for the expired Cisco CCDA test. Their is some similarity but the tests are not the same!
