CCENT 1 Exam,
By
This review is from: CCENT: Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician Study Guide: ICND1 (Exam 640-822) (Exam 640-822 With CD) (Paperback)
I have used Todd Lammle's books for several certification exams and I can attest to this book as another notch in that process. I passed my CCENT exam today with a 925 and I could not have done it without this book.
The other book that I used was Ciscos CCENT/CCNA ICND1 book written by Wendell Odem. This book and the free CD that comes with it closely resemble what the exam entails. With that said, why buy Todd Lammle's book? Easy. Todd explains the Cisco concepts, theory, in understandable terms that you walk away with knowledge and not scratching you head saying, huh? Now that I have taken a Cisco exam I know what to look for. I have both Todd Lammle's CCNA book and the Cisco CCENT\CCNA ICND2 for the second part of the certification exam. Transcender was a waste of money in preparing for this exam. The free CD that comes with the Cisco Book has the Boson testing format and it was very helpful in taking the exam.

Thanks to this book, I've got my CCENT!
It's a very good book, though it isn't perfect. There's a few typos and editing errors, the introduction claims the CD has video and audio lessons and it doesn't, and the Chapter 8 summary appearently decribes what the chapter was meant to include but not all of it was actually in the chapter (like the Cisco Unified Wireless Solution - which was fortunately not on the test). Despite those problems, it's a good book. The CCENT covers a lot of complex subjects, but this book makes them easy to understand and includes a lot of examples so you can drill it into your head. The written labs are hard, and really good for making sure you know your stuff and actually paid attention to the chapter. You probably should have a router or a simulation program (this book doesn't come with one) but if you have a lot of CLI experience you can just memorize the commands. If you apply yourself and really study this book passing the test should be pretty easy.

Excellent book for beginners,

I have no prior networking knowledge nor am I a computer science student. When I started reading this book, all I had with me was my curiosity, interest and passion to study computer networking. I have never even thought of writing a Cisco certified exam until then. Todd Lammle does a wonderful job of explaining the fundamental concepts so well that someone even with a passing interest in computer networking will like his writing style and learn the subject with ease.
This book makes sure that the fundamental concepts like subnetting, routing, etc - which very important, are completely ingrained into your head. All you need with you is a little patience since there are a lot of topics covered - if you are newbie. I studied this book, practiced subnetting like crazy and passed my CCENT exam. And not to mention, his other book, CCNA study guide is also excellent resource. Get this book if you are newbie!

This book was my #1 resource for passing the Cisco ICND1, 640-822 exam. Having never touched a router, other than at home to get DSL up, I went from zero knowledge to passing in a matter of three weeks. This book was well written. There are some typo's, so if you catch them (I found a good 5 or so) that's a great sign that you're understanding the material. This book and a router simulator are enough to pass, but it helps to also review the Cisco Press book for complete preparedness.

Doesn't cover all of the exam material,

This review is from: CCENT: Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician Study Guide: ICND1 (Exam 640-822) (Exam 640-822 With CD) (Paperback)
I was dismayed to find that the exam (640-822 ICND1) had numerous questions on some key concepts that were not included at all in the book - namely Subinterfaces, VLANs, and Access Control Lists. Fortunately, the questions on these topics were not too advanced and I was obviously able to make some educated guesses because I passed the exam...but still, it would be nice when buying a book labeled "Covers All Exam Objectives" to actually have a book that covers all exam objectives. I'm not sure if Cisco changed the exam objectives since the book was published or what, but it's pretty disappointing and frustrating to find yourself struggling to learn a new topic literally as you're taking the exam.
Critical omissions notwithstanding, it's obvious why Todd Lammle is widely considered the authoritative source for certification prep - his writing style is thorough and concise, he systematically builds on each topic before proceeding to the next, all of which makes for a very effective study aide. My advice, if you decide to take the CCENT-to-CCNA route like I did, would be to purchase his CCNA Study Guide for Exam 640-802 (ISBN 978-0-470-11008-9). Read everything except for Chapters 7 and 13 (dealing with EIGRP and OSPF routing protocols, and IPv6). That should be enough to make sure you're fully covered for the 640-822 ICND1 exam. Then again, since you'll have read 80% of the book at this point, why not cover Chapters 7 and 13 as well and just go straight for your CCNA (Exam 640-802 CCNA)? Probably the route I would have taken if I could do it again.

I bought the Cisco Press ICND1 book Interconnecting Cisco Network Devices, Part 1 (ICND1) (Hardcover). I then bought Todd's CCENT book. Just follow Todd's exam preparation suggestions, buy the Cisco Press ICND1 Book for the Boson Exam Prep, the Cisco Press Network Simulator CCNA 640-802 Network Simulator (CD-ROM) for added practice, and you will pass on the first try after 3 months of study.

Great job Mr. Lammle, I very much enjoyed this book.
I just took the CCENT this afternoon and passed it. I did well, although I could have done better. Nothing on the test was not covered in this book. This book provided something that I truly appreciated and that lacked in some other technical certification books: tons of examples and practice questions! In each chapter, there are quizzes, drills, and a host of other practice scenarios that will imprint that information in your brain. I also enjoyed the sense of humor, especially if you easily get bored with technical information (I don't, but some people do) as it breaks the monotonous nature of the subject sometimes. For those that complain about the errors: give me a break...any book will have some minor errors, and there weren't that many really. It is impossible not to miss a digit or a letter in a book like this. And yes changing one digit or one letter does make a difference, but it is not something to worry about in this book. I do have decent related work experience but this book is totally suitable for you if you are total newbie. You'll come across sentences that might be phrased like this: "a router can use PPP, but don't worry if you have no idea what that means, I will explain it in chapter x". Get this book - it is all you'll need! On to study for the second test now.

Simplicity is the order of the day,

This review is from: CCENT: Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician Study Guide: ICND1 (Exam 640-822) (Exam 640-822 With CD) (Paperback)
Todd Lamlee , what can i say? This is probably the best book i have read in terms of simplicity. You can read it like a Cinderella or Snow White. To put it is pure fun.All the concepts are clearly explained. And especially sub netting, this is the ultimate, i have read Wendell Odom, Exam Cram and even used CBT Nuggets,i felt CBT Nuggets came close to it. The book teaches sub netting as sub netting not some mathematical jaragon , sub netting has also been explained with clear cut real-world examples. This is certainly A+ as far as sub netting goes.CISCO IOS has also been clearly explained, with neat examples. I do feel for the critics of this book to.Yes it is not too detailed, some topics have not been covered, and not enough material. The written exercises are okay. I would say Wendell Odom is better in terms of detail, and exercises. But if Todd Lamlee was as detailed as Wendell Odom, then the material would be harder to assimilate. I would definitely recommend this book for rookies or for people who need to regain lost touch. No matter how simple and less detailed some topics are , this book has given me enough boost to lay a good foundation on which i can build myself a good career. So i would still say "SIMPLICITY IS THE ORDER OF THE DAY".

This book is a good starting point for anyone looking to begin CISCO certifications. However, you should have atleast 12 months networking experience before starting these courses as the content is fairly indepth and complicated but it will suite novices to networking.

Easier to read than the Cisco Press books. specially for none English native speakers.
The CCENT covers a lot of complex subjects, but this book makes them easy to understand and includes a lot of examples. You do not need to read more to pass your exam. |
