Accurate thumbnail sketches of topics in the blueprint,
By "mcnutt37" (Jacksonville Beach, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I would really rate the book a 3.5. The book does a good job of giving you a 1500 foot view of all of the topics covered in the blueprint (although cisco pulled Token Ring and IPX from the blueprint just this week so ignore those parts). The fact is of course, you have no hope of passing the exam using this as your only source of information. However, if you go through each chapter, and then fill in with supplementary reading on the topics presented and run some quick labs, it does serve as a good middle ground between the exam blueprint and the low level knowledge you'll need to pass the written exam. Much like the caslow book it makes for a good roadmap. Ok, now for the bad. 1. Book is worthless for lab preperation. skip the lab oriented chapters, there are better resources elsewhere. 2. Section on MPLS is awful!!!!!!! find another resource. 3. Multicast section was lacking as well. I mean really, really lacking. 4. with a given protocol, cisco wants you to understand how the state machine functions. the book does a great job of explaining the nerd knobs and the theory, but it doesn't really explain how the state machine works and why it was designed that way. knowing this kind of information really facilitates retention of the material and the ability to think through a question. a perfect example would be the chapter on BGP. yes the info is there, but without the "why is it like this" the material is very difficult to understand. Overall the quality of the book is quite high, and it will help you pass the written exam. Good luck!

Could be better,
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I wanted a tool to review this topics I forgot since I passed my Lab such as DLSW, Bridging, Token Ring, MultiCast, WAN... I failed on a first passed 69% instead of 70%! and then got it on the second pass 3 days later and one day before the end of my certif validation with 76%.In this book the topics are fairly well covered and offered a good synthesis. However the review questions are too light not of the level of the exam which also include some simple questions (but coverage is so large !). For someone preparing the lab exam as well, I would recommend to use on the Cisco Web site: 1) the Configuration guides and 2) the "Overview", "Implementation and Configuration" and "Verification and Troubleshooting" pages that you access with www.cisco.com -> Technical Support -> Technology support -> Topic of your choice (e.g. IP Multicast). They are really good and covered usual and sophisticated config and known problems and solutions.

Just passed the written exam today.,
By Justin Callaway (Denver, CO) - See all my reviews

Took and passed the CCIE written exam this morning. This book is the best one out there for a sole source preparation guide to the CCIE written. When I was studying for the written I did not want to have to buy five books to study, and what this book offered was a great reference/study guide that followed the written exam blueprint extremely well. I strongly recommend this book for anybody that is seriously preparing for the CCIE written exam. Also, based on the content of the book, I think it will be a major resource for my lab preparation as well.

Not just a study guide,

This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I personally need good reference books on examples of how to set up different types of networks in my everyday job. I have no desire at this time to study for a CCIE certification but am constantly on the lookout for detailed examples on how to set up and configure cisco equipment. This book is loaded with real life examples that can be used as a baseline for any network design type. I recommend this book as a "must have" for your personal library. Well written in easy to understand language and detailed examples that deal with any type network configuration every day.

A Great Reference,
By CG (Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
Great reference material to have around when you need some answers or examples to resolve that problem which jogs the memory. This book is well laid out and it is obvious that the authors have a lot of experience under their belts. The book is easy reading and the examples are well documented and relevant to day to day workings. I would say buy it, even if you are like me, not taking exams but want a good solid reference around. Good job Rob and Kevin.

Excellent Resource for CCIE Prep,
By Randy G (Rockwall, TX USA) - See all my reviews

This book rates up there with the best. It covers all the topics for CCIE preparation. All routing protocols found in the CCIE lab are covered, including an excellent reference for BGP. LAN switching as related to the 3550 switches is covered. Includes study material regarding the topics covered in the latest requirements for CCIE on the Cisco.com website. I use this book also as a reference for daily work activities as needed.

GREAT Book, but has errors,
By A Customer
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
This is a GREAT book, as I first used the Cisco Press R&S Written exam guide by Anthony Bruno, but the Cisco Press book does not provide any in-depth information, it only provides an introduction then points to a URL on the Cisco website. The Sybex CCIE Study Guide provides extremely in-depth coverage of the material, and it is written in everyday language so that it is easy to comprehend. I defintely recommend the Sybex book, and although there are errors in the book, go to the Sybex website and get the FREE Errata for this book, and you will have a great CCIE study guide and on-the-job reference.

A Wonderful Field and Classroom Reference,
By "beeryeast" (Colorado Springs, Colorado) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
As a network engineer by day and IT graduate professor by night, it is imperative that I have the most contemporary and accurate reference available for technical solution development in the field and lecture material in the classroom. The CCIE Study Guide is my choice for such a reference. Payne and Manweiler have done an exceptional job of providing a mile-wide and foot-deep network reference that satisfies my practical and theoretical knowledge needs. Although I'm not pursuing the lofty CCIE certification, their study guide accompanies me wherever I go. The layout of the book is extraordinarily well organized. The information builds gradually from the all-important OSI model to a crescendo of emerging technologies and convergence based services - all the while providing insight to the Cisco platforms necessary to deploy them. The Real-World-Scenario boxes throughout the book do a nice job illustrating actual field application of protocols and services. I've used the book in the field many times over the course of several months; specifically, I've used the catalyst references in chapter six and the ATM configurations in chapter four. In my estimation, the top three subject matter areas from the book include the very thorough routing sections, (Interior Gateway Protocols and BGP), the network security chapter, and the chapter 18 Quality of Service discourse. I've employed QoS parameters in the field while deploying VoIP solutions. Payne and Manweiler do a nice job of clearing up the mystery of QoS and clarifying its implementation strategy. Finally, I've found a new classroom reference for those hard-hitting classroom subnetting and supernetting calculations! I've recommended the CCIE Study Guide to my graduate students as well as my peers in the industry. This book is a must-have reference for anyone in the telecommunications and networking field - not just those professionals pursuing the revered CCIE credential.

I have personally taught over 20 CCIE's with this book at the IT Mentor CCIE Boot Camp. I think that this is one of the best books on the market for your CCIE studies. The book is filled with easy to read, useful information. The labs provide very good practice for the CCIE lab exam. If you can master these labs, you have a 90% chance of passing the CCIE lab on the first try.

Excellent CCIE Lab resource and Overall Reference,
By JR (Coppell, Tx.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert Study Guide - Routing and Switching, 2nd Edition (Paperback)
I found this book extremely useful and relevant for my lab preparation and continue to use it as a reference book for the various technologies. Specific chapters that standout and that I found particularly useful include: ATM; IS-IS; Protocol Redistribution and NAT; Multicast; Bridging and DLSW+ and BGP - the BGP chapter was excellent and extremely helpful! I also read the other reviews and would like to add that yes, unfortunately, there are errors/typos (...) Overall, I highly recommend this book for anyone studying for the CCIE Written Exam or the Lab! Great work and thank you very much, Rob and Kevin.
