5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CCIE Lab Prep
I have used several ccie lab preps and books but have never come across anything as good as this one. I just wish it had come out a few months earlier, so I would have more time to pratice the labs. The book is jam packed with numerious exercises and several ccie day-one-type labs at the end of the book for practicing the real lab. There are diagrams for every exercise...

3.0 out of 5 stars A great resource - but use with MUCH caution!
CiscoPress's "CCIE Practical Studies - Volume 1" by Solie is a difficult book to assess. On one hand, the book does an excellent job at covering half of the topics that you will see on the CCIE lab at the time of the book's printing. On the other hand, the book is riddled with errors. Every page, almost every config needs to be examined, reexamined and then, perhaps,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CCIE Lab Prep, January 5, 2002

This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
I have used several ccie lab preps and books but have never come across anything as good as this one. I just wish it had come out a few months earlier, so I would have more time to pratice the labs. The book is jam packed with numerious exercises and several ccie day-one-type labs at the end of the book for practicing the real lab. There are diagrams for every exercise and scenario. This book certainly makses Caslow's obsolite and threatens the the businesses that have sprang up selling ccie labs. The down side of the book is, this is vol 1 and doesn't have IPX, BGP, IS-IS, IPSec, and Multicast which the author says will be in vol 2. Also the solutions for the labs at the end of the book can be downloaded from a Cisco site. I think this should have been on a CD and included with the book. I can't even find the solutions on Cisco site; it is probably not postered yet. The price is steep, but compared to what is out there, it is worth every penny.

5.0 out of 5 stars To focus on exam - CCIE # 9285, April 5, 2002
This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
It was my main book to prepare the exam. It is well focused on exam. It includes some fast and good therorical parts. During the exam you need to be fast. You get speed with confidence in your knwoledge and practice. The book help you very much in that sense because it gives you a method with the main steps, the traps you'll face and the main show and debug command.
It offers nice and sophisticated exercises and labs. A very good way to check your level and practice "translation" of an instruction into a configuration.
Does not include QOS, IPX, BGP but on those we already have the CD and good books. For those not familiar with Cisco Voice and ATM, it gives exactly what we need for the exam. With or without it, it requires work and practice.
With some luck, I passed on the first time.

5.0 out of 5 stars The MUST HAVE Book for CCIE candidates, January 18, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
This great book gives CCIE candidates the kind of info needed to present the new 1 day lab exam, I eagerly wait for Volume II of this book (Vol I does not cover BGP, Multicast, VPNs and some other topics that are currently part of the CCIE Lab). If you are looking for a clear and accurate study material for the CCIE Lab THIS IS THE BOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A book that is missing the answers!, January 17, 2002

This book helped me out in my pursuit of the famous 4 numbers. Although some sections are a little light, Karl makes up for it in DLSW and ISDN. I like his labs in the back and was able to get them all done, but I had no answers to compare to. There is more than one way to skin the cat and I just wanted to see if Karl did it differently than I. I e-mailed and he responded. He said they will be available shortly. Missing the answers was the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best as book but not unique, August 3, 2002

This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
Yes, this book is the best on the market in it's own class, but
if you are looking for a MANY great practical labs, just go Cisco
& search "Technical Tips" ... & no pay your $$$ for information.

This is the best Cisco Press book I have ever bought. It has everything you need and nothing you don't. I thought it was perfect because it was a refresh of all the CCNP books in one! The labs are awesome (even though they require alot of equipment)I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to get a straight and to the point "Here's what you need to do, how to do it, and why" book

5.0 out of 5 stars all serious network engineers need this book, April 27, 2002
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
I bought this for my CCIE lab exam prep, and it was head
and shoulders above anything else I've seen, including some
very expensive ccie lab prep manuals. You will not be disappointed, Karl presents dificult problems and then shows
you step by step how they are solved correctly.

Even if you are not pursuing the CCIE ciertification, every
serious network engineer needs to understand this material.

5.0 out of 5 stars The difinitive study guide for the CCIE lab exam!!!, March 3, 2002

This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
This is the best lab exam preparation book ever! The book assumes that you possess a strong knowledge of network protocols and understand a great deal about routing and switching, so it's not necesssarily the first book you should read. But it should definitely be the last book you read before taking the lab exam. If you do- not just read, but actually do the practice tests at the end of the book you will be very well prepared for the Cisco exam. I hope volume II comes out soon!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for CCIE study and real world network engineers, September 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: CCIE Practical Studies, Volume I (Hardcover)
It not only teaches the "hows" but also the "whys" of networking. For instance, why do I disable split horizons in a Frame Relay multipoint network, not just how do I configure it. The labs are extremely well thought out, with many hidden problems that don't surface until you actually do the lab. The labs are also very difficult. The constant practice working through the labs also re-enforces topics taught in previous sections. There are many topics in the book that just aren't covered anywhere else. There are some "typos" but hardly any "errors", especially for a book of this size and complexity. The errors I did find were already covered in the errata. Kudos on an excellent book.

Solie's book is a standard for CCIE prep. Like all technical books, this one is not perfect either, but they do publish corrections and do provide configuration solutions on ciscopress.com. Good practical information as well as some challenging labs. http://www.cciesecrets.net/ for more info on CCIE studies.
