CCIE exam guide,
By Victor Tiswell (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
The CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide by Wendell Odom is comprehensive, concise and cost effective.
The content of the book covers the CCIE 3.0 written exam blueprint in sufficient detail. There is no unnecessary fluff anywhere in the book. We all know that CCIE material is not exactly light reading, but the CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide goes into technical details without being tedious. Yes, there are typos but this does not detract from the overall usefullness of this book. CCIE training/prep classes are not cheap and a typical class may cost thousands of dollars. For anyone preparing for the CCIE written exam by self study, Wendell Odom's book is a great resource to have in your library.

This is an excellent book for the CCIE Ver 3 Routing & Switching exam. I needed Ver 3 for recertification and found the book to be most helpful. Wendell Odom is an excellent author. I've got several of his CCIE books and each and every one of them is excellent.

Enough despite numerous errors.,

Hi, this book has many errors in the examples given, which often leads to confusion. Not sufficiently detailed in many of the sections, so if you have no prior knowledge of certain subjects to suggest others as support.
Still remains a complete book to prepare for the exam so that I recommend. I have been enough to pass the written examination.

Just good enough,

Although I managed to pass the written Routing and Switching CCIE exam using this book, it contains too many typos.
If you have enough patience to accept and overcome these errors, the book addresses well the technical aspects necessary for a CCIE certification - at least for written exam.

Excelent review book for those on the CCIE track,

This is a tough topic to jam into one book but Wendell Odom did just that. The target of this book is someone is preparing for the CCIE Written exam and it is not intended to give a full depth of knowledge on all topics. In fact in one case Mr Odom flat out says he are not going to cover much on frame relay because most engineers are very familiar with the topic. Also typical Cisco Press books end with a review of the topic covered in that chapter but this one does not, in basically all chapters he introduces something new with minimal detail. I say all that to point out you have to make sure you are the intended target, someone close to taking the CCIE Written. This will not give you enough details on its own but its a great read. Also the review sections are great knowledge builder because they give you terms you need to know and the CD includes blank forms for you to fill in help build that knowledge. I definitely say this a book you want to read on your way to a CCIE. I found it to be very informative will be reading it again along my to being a CCIE. The only complaint I have is that there are a number of typo's (as many tech books have) but this is the 3rd edition and I would hope most would have been fixed by now.

One year after passing the written,

I bought this book about a year ago.
I passed the written first time using only the text in this book. Now one year later and closing in on the lab exam I can tell that this book together with the doccd has helped me a lot in explaining the technologies. So, is this book a good source for preparing for the CCIE RnS written exam?; yes definitely! I give this book 5 stars because I find it an extremely well written book that keeps its relevance way after the written exam. Excellent work Wendell! The only section I found weak in this book was the section on frame-relay. Could it be because we are moving away from frame-relay to MPLS? Either way the frame-relay section could be made better.

Best Book for CCIE Preparation,

This book has all the needed theory for the written exam as well as LAB exam. You may not have to look beyond this book to understand the concepts provided you are an experienced network engineer.

I read couple times this book to prepare for the CCIE R/S written. I failed twice. I finally passed the test using other resources. It is a good book to refresh your routing/switching knowledge overall but it will not prepare you adequately for the test and the tricky questions in this test. Interestingly enough, this book is more geared towards the actual CCIE R/S lab because of the examples put forward. The chapters are not equally writtent at the same level. For example, IPV6 chapter is done pretty well where as other chapters miss the mark.

It is the only thing to this book to be completed.

Riddled with typos,
By
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Certification Guide (3rd Edition) (Hardcover)
The book and the CD-ROM practice questions are riddled with typos.
The practice questions on the CD-ROM are incomplete. There are missing and incomplete diagrams. There are missing exhibits (these are usually configuration pieces and output from router show commands). Its kind of hard to answer those questions that reference missing exhibits and diagrams. Also, many of the questions have incorrect answers and missing explanations. Instead of an explanation you see "Please enter your explanation here." Taking all of this into account, it is clear this book was rushed to market. I hope that CiscoPress and the author will do the right thing and fix the CD-ROM practice questions, and offer a patch or an update via Boson. Come on guys! Also, why did the previous edition of this book have over 500 questions and this one only has 250 or so? Its almost all the same material, just a couple of chapters difference between the two editions. Honestly, 500 isn't even enough. There should be 1000 practice questions at least. You should also integrate the appendix of tables into flash card format and include that on the CD. That would be a REAL memory building tool. |
