Outstanding Source to Tie it All Together,
By Haywood Gelman (Boston, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
I found this book to be an outstanding guide through the quagmire that is the CCIE written exam. An important fact to remember- the Exam Cram book series in general is not intended to make you an expert in any subject in which you don't already have experience. The structure of this book is consistent with other Exam Cram books: to give you a solid foundation if you don't have much experience, and to act as the glue to tie it altogether if you do have experience. (There are references at the end of every chapter on "Need to Know More" to get detailed information where the coverage is thin in the book.) The fact is, to pass the CCIE written, you need to do more that just read books. Practical experience and hands on are just as important, which is why the author gives configuration examples for every Cisco technology required to pass the exam. Not only did this book help me to pass my written exam, but I could not have done it without it. I found the text easy to read and quick to sink in, which is critical when study-time is at a premium. I finished the book in a week, and then passed my exam. I highly recommend this book.

Not quite enough...,
By
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
I looked at this exam cram after I took my CCIE written and it did not cover questions that I had. I specifically looked for LOTS of questions that I saw on the exam and they just weren't in the exam cram. I saw a couple of mistakes (example, picture of RSRB has mismatching ring numbers). I think it's good to get an overview but it doesn't go deep enough to pass the exam. You definatly need other sources. I'm a firm believer that for the CCIE written, there's no 'easy' way to study and you won't find all the information you need in one book.

A lot of typos,

This is a decent study aid, but it has a lot of mistakes that could possibly cause you to answer incorrectly on the real exam. Another round of editing and this exam cram will be ready for prime time.

Sufficient if not excellent,

This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
Basically, it is more than enough to get through the written exam (probably w/ 5 or 10 points to spare). Not a great text. The numerous editing errors grow tedious. The dozens of oversights/errors range from insignificant to misleading. If you want to nail the test and only use one reference, this would suffice. Three stars-decent content/poor editing

Don't Buy This Book if You Want to Pass the Exam!,

This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
This exam cram is filled with errors! This is a prime example of a publisher wanting to get something out on the market without ensuring that the material is accurate. The publisher's website has some corrections, but finding them is an adventure in it's own right. After printing the corrections on the pubhisher's website, I noticed even more errors that have not been documented. I would not recommend this book to any serious CCIE candidate.

Use to Cross-Reference,
By Mark Arnold (Attleboro, MA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
The book is a guick read as the title suggests (EXAM CRAM). I gave it a 3 because it forces one to cross reference (not because of the content per se) since it contains unfortunate errors in a number of places. And this is a good thing. If one has studied this text (in a negative-postive twist) keeps you on your toes. As a cram it is fine. If this is your sole text you will get hosed. Cross-reference much and see if you can spot the errors. I'm sure this is more a publishing thing than the oversight of the authors.

Finishing off The Study,
By Ben Thomas (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
Good overall book for finishing off the studying for the CCIE written. I passed the written on the first go. However, there are quite a few typos, some misc fact errors and the sample test/questions don't reflect what is actually on the test (way to easy). Would definitely review the CCIE TCP/IP Vol. I&II and CCIE Switching books, especially focusing on the review questions - not multiple choice but fill in the blank. The bottom line ... Don't expect to pass the written exam if this is your only source of knowledge/experience.

Please do not waste your time with this book. It is full of mistakes and inaccurate information. And in parts where it is correct, it is usually incomplete.I began to compile a list of typos, but totally gave up.

I give it an upgrade to 3 Stars!!,
By David H Voss (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Cram (Exam: 350-001) (Paperback)
Initially I slated it for 2 stars, because I didn't feel the material was very meaty. I know it's supposed to be a Cram, but sorry, it just didn't have what I was looking for. The more I studied, the less I referenced this book.BUT, now, on the night before my exam, I'm taking the 100 question test in the back of the book and I'm impressed with it. The questions seem to be on the mark and challenging. You get an upgrade! 3 Stars! |
