Product Description

The Premium Radio Designed for Long-Range AM Reception and Emergencies! Reception and audio are two reasons to own a better made portable radio. For over 10 years C. Crane's CCRadio line has had some of the best AM reception available in a radio. With the new CCRadio-2 Enhanced version, audio can be accurately tuned for realistic human voice. It can also be adjusted for good musical performance! FM reception is a full step up in its ability to bring in a weak station clearly. The CCRadio-2E Enhanced also has the weather band/alert along the 2-meter Ham band. The five memory buttons on top of the radio make it easier to change stations rather than front mounted buttons. The boost in AM performance comes from C. Crane's patented Twin-Coil Ferrite® AM Antenna. This technology can give a noticeable boost to weak AM signals under most circumstances. After you select a station, the CCRadio-2E evaluates the signal for several seconds and then locks it in for the best possible signal. The display features a full backlight and three levels of brightness and an "off" setting. The Weather Band, with a very loud alert, can keep you informed of any NOAA alerts. The 2-Meter Ham band may make the CCRadio-2E a life saver during an emergency. Two Meter Ham operators are early on the scene of an emergency and they donate their time while handling perhaps 90% of emergency coordination efforts. The CCRadio-2E makes it easy to hear the vital information they share by acting like a simple radio scanner, searching five programmable memories for Ham operator communications. The sensitivity (squelch) can be adjusted for best results. Features include: 5 one touch memory presets per band, adjustable display light, adjustable bass and treble, clock alarm, sleep timer, auto scan, stereo headphone jack, line-input jack, and line-output jack. Runs on included AC power cord or four (optional) "D" batteries. Weight: 4 lbs (without batteries) Size: 11" W x 6.5" H x 4" D.

The CCRadio series has received mixed reviews over the years, mainly for the uneven durability of its LCD display in the earlier models and susceptibility to strong signal overload. I've put off buying one until the newest version, the CCRadio 2E. Now I have it, and I can report that this model is precisely as advertised. Solid build, excellent sound for a single speaker radio, including the best AM fidelity I've heard anywhere, super reception on AM and FM, a variety of useful connections, long life on batteries, non-wall-wart power cord, multiple brightness levels on its LCD display, and many features making the radio useful for a variety of purposes. I've also found the weather band and weather alert system to be very useful and reliable, and the 2-meter ham band to be a lot of fun. If I have any "cons" it would be the lack of in-radio battery rechargeability and the lack of an included carrying case. I have not thoroughly checked weak AM signal DX'ing here in strong-signal-rich New York City, but my dabbling in it thus far has been successful. I don't see how a knowledgeable radio enthusiast cannot be thrilled with this radio.

If you live in an area where AM and FM signals are weak or difficult to receive, the CCRadio 2E is for you! The CC2E boasts stellar RF performance on all four bands, and especially so on FM and AM. To put it simply, RF performance refers to a radio's ability to receive signals. The CC2E is very sensitive! If there is the slightest hint of a signal in your area, the CC2E will grab it. As sensitive as this radio is on FM, it's equally selective! Its ability to receive the weakest signals sandwiched tightly between very strong ones is amazing! This quality is a godsend, especially in inner-city environments where there are typically numerous local FM stations. On AM, the CC2E is an apex performer! At no time is this more apparent than during the daylight hours when distant AM signals are at their weakest. I know very little about the design of the CC2E, but it appears to have a very aggressive AGC (automatic gain control). If a weak signal is tuned in, this AGC circuit automatically adjusts so that weak signals are proportional in loudness to strong signals. There appears to be some type of noise suppression technology at work in the CC2E as well, but not at the expense of its superb sensitivity. The noise suppression is especially helpful when listening during lightning storms. The snaps and pops heard on radios during such storms, although still audible on the CC2E, are not anywhere near as jarring as on most other radios. The CC2E is superior to all previous models of CCRadios in every aspect of RF performance. The CC2E is also less susceptible to overloading of strong signals than previous models of the CCRadios. Overloading is an undesirable effect, which causes strong signals to spill over onto adjacent frequencies in the form of distortion.Read more ›

Despite some shortcomings in features, this radio has amazing AM performance. It really pulls in some problem AM stations that I want to listen to. Good noise rejection. I have a fluorescent light in the house that really obliterates any AM reception on all my other radios. Except this one. Even with my weak station tuned in, that interference is quite minimal. It's not magic of course, I do need to strategically place the radio for quiet reception, but it is leaps and bounds above my other radios. One comparison: Grundig G5. This radio is very good on long distance AM stations, but the CC Radio 2E just blows it away on AM. FM performance is good, similar performance to the G5.

AM is tough in general. Many variables affect performance, especially local interference from things like power lines, computers, tv's, and florescent lights. Bottom line is no one can say for sure how a radio will perform on a particular station in your area. You just need to try it.

The cons:
You cannot directly enter a frequency. You must crank it in with the up/down buttons or the tuning wheel.

Only 5 presets per band can be a nuisance especially since you can not directly enter a frequency.

The FM antenna seems frail, especially the smallest tip section. Use it carefully. It is shorter and much thinner than the antenna on my CC SW Pocket radio. Crane does sell replacements. I was expecting a little more robust antenna in this price range, it looks and feels wimpy.

The batteries are a pain to remove. There should have been one of those ribbons installed to easily pop the batteries out.

The molded-in hand hold for carrying the radio does not leave one with a secure grip. It may be adequate to reposition the radio on a table, but carry at your own risk.

The CC Radio-2E is by far the best of the CC Radio series. There is a very noticeable difference in performance with earlier versions, especially in the AM Band. The noise floor is lower, making it more sensitive than the previous versions, and hence the better Radio for AM Dxing. The audio quality is superior to the previous versions, especially noticeable in the AM Band. The tone controls now have a wider range and a more noticeable effect There is some improvement in the FM performance, but this is less obvious. The other features are similar to the earlier versions.
If you listen to a great deal of talk radio on AM, or listen to AM stations that broadcast music you will be very pleased with the CC Radio-2E . If you are a Dx "hound" you will like the CC Radio-2E. Or if you want the Best, this is the radio for you.
