5.0 out of 5 stars A little slice of heaven....
Ben Harper, A little bit Jimi and a little bit Marley and a whole lot of soul. I give it to you straight, I haven't purchased this set but I have purchased each album individually when they were released. This set is great for those new to Ben especially after the Burn to Shine release brought him to the masses. You can get your fill for a lower price with this set...

Ben Harper is my favorite artist and I'd like to share a few thoughts here:

If you are a big enough Ben fan, you probably have his albums already, and maybe some of his single CD's with some of the unreleased tracks.

This set is great for those new to Ben especially after the Burn to Shine release brought him to the masses. You can get your fill for a lower price with this set. Ben mixes blues with funk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and classical with the greatest of ease. He is truely a genius, because never before has a man brought so many genres of music together into what can only be described as a symphony. Speaking of symphonies just listen to Roses from My Friends and you can feel the energy, passion and emotion which is truely immense. He is one of the few true artists of our time, so if you don't have this pick it up. Ballads to Blues Jams- Ben does it all.

5.0 out of 5 stars What? Only 5 stars allowed????, August 6, 2000

Ben Harper has GOT to be the unknown love child of Nina Simone and Muddy Waters, with a sprinkle of Bob Marley in the bath water. This dude blows me away, and I'm a hard man to please. He goes from treating you to some good mojo in songs like "Breakin' Down" to lulling you with instrumentals like "Number Three" and then makes you depressed with tunes like "Another Lonely Day" and then slides church Sunday on you in tunes like "By My Side" Ben Harper defies my being able to put him in any single category, and I like that. I like that ALOT! No matter what your tastes, Ben has probably got you covered. Order this set, which collects his first three albums, then make sure to also order his latest release "Burn to Shine" for the complete collection. BUY THESE RIGHT NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite artist... Ben Harper is amazing!, September 9, 2000

Ben Harper is a fantastic musician, and his lyrics are straight from the heart... a lyrical genius! What could possibly be better then getting three of Ben Harper's best cds in one? I have four... I keep one in my living room, one in my room, and two in my car so I can always be wrapped up in this beautiful music.

I would compare Ben's music as perhaps a more modern version of the legend Bob Marley, or just as spirited, but deeper Jimmy Hendix, and even as male, and more intriguing Tracy Chapman.

This man is the most talented artist I've ever heard, and is deeply under appreciated. From "Welcome to the Cruel World", "Fighting for your mind", and "The Will to Live"... these three cds will sink deep down inside of you. These cleverly thought out lyrics are so beautiful, and meaningful, I'm brought to tears every now and then.

Buy this cd, if not for the lyrics that will leave you in awe, or for his utterly amazing talent at playing the lap slide guitar... but for yourself. This music has made me think about life, and myself more then ever. Bless Ben Harper.

I hate when artists do this, and this has Virgin Records written all over it. A money maker, but does nothing for the real fans who want to hear his new stuff.

I heard from a friend who worked on the album that Virgin sent back Burn to Shine 3 times because they "didn't hear a radio single on the entire album."

Anyway, any Ben is Good Ben...and these are three great albums.

If you do not own any of them: good purchase! If you do own them: don't fall for the trap!

5.0 out of 5 stars You must own this., December 21, 2000

Though I do not own this box set, I own all 4 of Ben's albums. They are each amazing in their own right, but I am especially a fan of the first two. This man's voice is amazing, going from a soothing whisper in one song to an angry growl in the next. That plus his kickin' Weissenborn playing, he'll suck you in for sure. I also recommend seeing him live - he does a version of Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing that blows you away.

Here you get three of the best albums of the 90's all wrapped in a nice burlap box for your enjoyment. Ben Harper is a marvelous cross between Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix and Curtis Mayfield. These three albums are his first three and I would consider them essential for any serious collection of 90's pop/rock. There is not much more to say, just buy them already!!!

Ben is so awesome. This box set shows off his multitude of talents. He has incredible lyrics that anyone can relate with. He is soulful and true through his music. Once you hear him you won't want to listen to anything else. Ben provides down to earth sounds from Welcome to the Cruel World to electrified harmonic bliss to your senses in The Will to Live. He will captivate and intrigue you for whatever mood you are in, his music is so universal.

This review is from: CD Box Collection (Audio CD)
For those fans of Ben's who do not have his full collection (sans the newest album with the Criminals) this set is the best. All of his best work in one box! Can't get any better than this. I have been waiting for 3 months for this CD set to be available, and it was well worth the wait! I am so happy to have this now!

I've been a Ben Harper fan for almost 10 years now. What an amazing artists! If you want to buy an album...buy this one. You want to feel something? Buy this album. You want to fall in love with music all over? Listen to Ben Harper. There aren't artists that come around everyday like him. It's rockin, it's mellow, it's pain, it's pleasure, and it's a must have.

I recently saw BEN HARPER on the PBS TV saturday night weekly AUSTIN CITY LIMITS and this guy and his band blew his "Live" audience and myself off our surroundings with his pure and earthy multitextured brand of original music. Whether it's rock, pop, a little bit of country, reggae, blues, or jazz tinged soulful R&B music, BEN is one of the very few all around musicians who captivates and leaves you spellbound with his sincere performances. No question about it: I had to purchase this box set and the other three cds. BEN HARPER's recordings are priceless and classic...he thoroughly entertains and lifts you with his music and message. I wish I'd been exposed to BEN HARPER years ago, but, better late than never...Simply irresitable! THANK YOU PBS TV & Austin City Limits!
