Wonderful alternative sound,

It's a shame that the Communards broke up shortly after the release of their second album "Red" because they truly created a very unique sound.Their self-titled first album is a brilliant mix of sounds from up tempo disco beat in "Don't Leave Me This Way" to a softer quiet haunting ballad of "Reprise". This album features quite a few hits including "Don't Leave Me This Way", "Disenchanted" a powerful song about love and anger, "So Cold the Night" and "You are My World". If you like Jimmy Somerville's solo stuff how can you pass up on his days with the Communards. Jimmy and Richard Cole created a marvelous album here that should not be forgotten.

If you've ever clubbed on a retro night, I'm sure you've heard The Communards somewhere along the way... This CD is classic synth-pop with some wonderful upbeat songs, ballads, and piano laced instrumentals. Richard Cole handles the music with some classical and jazz influences, while Jimmy Sommerville belts out lyrics of love and anger in his ever present falsetto. I would've given this a five, but there are a few songs that didn't do much for me. My favorites include: "Don't Leave Me This Way" (A Club Anthem!)/"La Dolorosa"(Ole!)/"Disenchanted"(Sometimes I miss the 80's)/"Reprise"(Mmmmm...)/"So Cold The Night." If you collect synth-pop, or like retro music, this may be 4 U>>>

This probably isn't actually good music, but I am shamelessly fond of it.The 12" mix of "Don't Leave Me This Way" is one of the all-time great dance tracks. If you were drinking at a college bar in the mid-to-late 80's, you know what I am saying. After the A-Ha, but before "Paradise by the Dashboard Lights," and sometime around "I Melt With You," this was the time/song of the evening that you were finally drunk enough to start dancing to. The rest of this album is just fine...but who cares?
