The things I really like about this timer:
When the timer counts down to zero, the alarm beeps continuoulsy for a minute. Also, a little indicator will come on saying "Time's Up", and the counter start to count up. Also, the time will blink - so if you are using multiple timers in a noisy environment, you can see which timer has expired. The magnetic clip uses a real magnet that holds more securely than other timer's I've tried. Also, there is a piece of wire that easily flips down to convert the timer into a free standing counter-top unit. The LCD segments are nice and fat, and has pretty decent contrast. Much easier to read than cheaper counters. You can assign the count-down duration to a memory button, so that if you're always using the same duration, it only takes two presses to reload the timer duration. The timer is utilitarian -- it's not much to look at -- but it sure works well!

CDN truly delivers a great multi function product with this timer. Simply slide the switch on the side to switch from clock mode, count down mode to timer mode. The timer beep is very loud and works great as a portable alarm clock. The countdown feature helps with time management and the count up feature is also a great time measurement tool. These are the same timers that are used by Starbucks coffee shops. Features a built on magnet with a push out stand so that it can rest on it's own or be placed on a magnetic surface. I love my timer/clock/alarm, and the battery is user replaceable, just swing by any k-mart or wal-mart and head for the watch section, to find a replacement battery. The only thing I would add is a 'lock' feature, other than that it's almost perfect!

Little timer with a loud signal,

This timer is simple to use and broadcasts a very loud alarm signal, which is very important to me. So many digital timers can't be heard just one room away. I've had my CDN timer for years, and have bought additional ones as gifts.

Good, but can be improved,
This review is from: CDN TM8 Digital Timer and Clock Memory Feature (Kitchen)
This is a good timer, and gets all the function I need - clock, count-up and count-down. It helps me a lot, especially when counting down ebay auctions. The only drawback of this timer is: when you use it as a clock and accidentally touch the "HR", "MIN" or "SEC" button, THE TIME CHANGES! I owned another similiar timer before, which is cleverer: the clock time changes only when you press "MEMORY" and one of the "HR", MIN" or "SEC" button at the same time. I guess this timer can be improved in this way as well. Other then this, it's a great timer.

Just received the unit and tested it. Seems a bit overpriced at $15, it is obviously pretty cheaply made. It is easy to use but I don't feel the alarm is quite loud enough, especially if you are like me and work in another room away from the kitchen. I suppose you could move it around with you. I don't see the utility in having it "chirp" every time you press a button, the display tells you all you need to know. I like the fact it has a magnet on it.

The timer does pretty much what a timer should do. Admittedly I only use the countdown feature. It has an adequate beep if you are in the same room but if you're further away, it doesn't do well in alerting you. It does have a clip so you could attach it to your clothing and take it with you. Potential buyers should be aware that this timer uses an LR44 battery instead of an AAA battery. The LR44 is a little harder to find and certainly more expensive.

We have a couple of these that we use around the kitchen. I use mine to time espresso shots each morning. Timer works simply and is not frustrating -- has an easy to read contrasty screen, is built in a solid manner, and is loud enough that you can't miss it (countdown alarm).
I particularly like the rear clip. It has a solid, strong spring so functions well as a clip, but also has a drop-down metal bar that converts it to a counter-top stand. It's quick to switch when moving the timer. The back also includes a strong (real) magnet. I also haven't had to change the battery yet in several years of use. Most Starbucks I've been in use them, that's saying something!

This is the second of this brand and model timer I have owned. (I now own two.)
I find this timer easy to operate and versatile. The only problem (and a very slight problem) that I had was inserting the batteries. Possibly just user incompetence.

Starbucks timer,
This review is from: CDN TM8 Digital Timer and Clock Memory Feature (Kitchen)
Many years ago I worked as a Barista at Starbucks. We had a method of setting a timer for 10 minutes and doing a "sweep"- one of us would shift from behind the bar to the sitting area, do a quick pick up of used dishes, wipe off tables and chairs, refill milk and sugar packets, etc. We used these timers exclusively. We'd set the memory button to 10 minutes, and every time it would beep, we'd reset it to start over and do the sweep. Its easy to use, easy to program, its very loud so you can hear over the espresso machines and coffee grinders, it keeps beeping until you get annoyed and turn it off, and it takes one 375/303 watch button-type battery that's easy to find and lasts a REALLY long time regardless. I "borrowed" this years ago and have only changed the battery once. I've since purchased two more online because I love it so much. I have two in the kitchen on one in the laundry room. It clips to my belt so I can know when the laundry is done even if I'm too far to hear the buzzer. When I am done I just use the magnet to attach to the washer so I don't lose it. I use one to time my haircolor, and it stands up with the kickstand in the bathroom. My boyfriend borrows it sometimes for the gym, because it makes a great makeshift interval timer, and its half the price of specialized gym timers out there, not that he cares, because he gets it for free...) I'm also a Flylady fan, and use it to time my 15 min "home blessings." I've purchased other timers, but I don't like one or more features (one I had would beep when I have 5 min left before the time is up- if I wanted to know 5 min early, I would've set it 5 min early! Its annoying to go run and check on my cake thinking times up, when I really have 5 more min. Ugh.) and I prefer the sound of this one, and all the nifty features, like the magnet, clip, kickstand, memory button, countdown, etc. Its very pricey I think at almost $13 but as many times as I have dropped them, they haven't busted on me yet, so its a worthwhile investment.

I originally bought this timer at Dick Smith's in New Zealand, (they are nearly identical to the ones on Amazon) and they were so amazing that I bought three more. I love products that are simple and work exactly the way they are supposed to. So many other either aren't loud enough, break easily, aren't intuitively designed, or don't have the features that you actually need, but give you ones you don't. This timer has 3 settings: Clock, Count-Up, and Timer. It has a analog switch that lets you choose between modes. If you choose timer mode, you can independently choose how many seconds, minutes, and/or hours you want to count down from. (up to 24 hours). It will continue to count down no matter what mode you switch to, and the alarm will sound when it reaches zero, regardless of what mode you are in (which is nice). You can even use count-up at the same time! Another great thing is that when the timer reaches 0:00:00 it will begin counting up so you can figure out how far off you were on your target time. (also: the alarm sounds for exactly 1 minute), I honestly have several of these timers, which I use for many different purposes and keep them all over the house: Timing showers for water consumption, cooking, drying glue, doing wash, measuring distance over time, time management, etc. They're basically perfect. PROS: Timer and count-up work at the same time; remembers settings indefinitely; loud alarm; big display; memory setting; independently choose hour/minute/second; numbers go up quickly if button is held; battery lasts a long time and are easy to come by; has a clip AND strong magnet; when timer finishes counting down, it starts counting up again CONS: buttons make loud beeping sound when pressed; no alarm setting for the clock; time is displayed in AM/PM only, not army time (if you're into that); 24 hour limit on timer/count up (usually enough); alarm goes off for 1 minute only (which can also be a blessing if you're still in the shower for another 5 minutes!); this is not a stopwatch! (it can't do laps or milliseconds) UPDATE: forgot to mention that these are the same timers used by baristas in nearly every Starbucks. |
