4.0 out of 5 stars So far so good...
I called the company to ask which thermometer to buy. I bought this one because -
1. It does NOT have preset temps. for rare, medium, well done... (we pull red meat, medium rare at 130 degrees). I want to just set the temperature and have it beep when the temperature is reached. This thermometer does that VERY NICELY.
2. The temperature range is past 500...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good functionality but not Durable
My first TSP572 unit developed a stress crack in the corner of the display; it was replaced under warranty.

Longer-term, the temperature probe cable jacket started decomposing immediately, not only where a hot oven door closes upon it in use, but also where the cable joins the bent-tube probe tip.

As a product design engineer, the probe-cable...

1. It does NOT have preset temps. for rare, medium, well done... (we pull red meat, medium rare at 130 degrees). I want to just set the temperature and have it beep when the temperature is reached. This thermometer does that VERY NICELY.
2. The temperature range is past 500 degrees. I figured I had less likelehood of having problems with the thing dying in a hot oven if it had a higher temp range. The last probe thermometer I bought from another company lasted one, yes one use. It took me two years to buy another and so far, it is working like a champ.
3. The thermometer has a tougher wire than most and plugs into the unit with a stereo type plug (not easy to get to). If you pull, the probe unplugs instead of breaking.

The negative - no off and on switch; in order to save batteries you have to remove the back and the batteries..

So far, it has worked really well. The probe wraps nicely around the unit for storage. The digital readout is nice and large.

I find it interesting that the price point is lower because the unit does not have preset temps - a feature that I find annoying and useless anyway. Oh, well, I happily kept my money.

Time will tell if it can stand up to the heat...

As a product design engineer, the probe-cable assembly is IMO poorly designed using unsuitable materials. Considering the replacement cost of just the probe is currently ~$8, about 1/4 the cost of a new unit, I don't believe I'd buy this product again or recommend it to others.

First, the pros:

- Easy to use, big numbers, accurate

But many cons:

- Short wire
- On/Off switch in back is small and hard to push with fingers

And finally, mine died after 10 months, used perhaps 10 times (well, unit is fine, something is loose in the thermocouple wire so it sometimes does not read the temperature). My old Polder unit lasted 12 years.

We've had this for a few months and mostly use the timer, without problem. We have used the temp probe a few times and it seems to be accurate. The temp probe does not remove from the unit, unlike others I have owned, but it doesn't seem to be an issue. However, the temp probe wraps neatly around the unit on the back, out of site, with the probe sticking up as seen in the picture - a feature I love. The readout is easy to see, and the magnet that secures it to the front of my fridge is strong, the unit does not slide down.

4.0 out of 5 stars almost the most wonderful ever...., January 18, 2012
This review is from: CDN Touch Screen Probe Thermometer and Timer (Kitchen)
I am a coffee/tea snob, and when making the perfect cup, the water needs to be *just the right temperature*.

This is my fourth or fifth digital thermometer, and has been the most reliable and accurate of all the others. I like how the timer has both hour/minute settings AND minute/second settings -- perfect for those 2min, 30second brews.

The big problem with this unit is it automatically turns itself off, but the off/on button is microscopic small, and hidden on the back of the unit. It has nice strong magnets, so mine lives on the side of the fridge. But every time I want to use it, I have to pause, pull it off, carefully press the miniscule on button, put it back on the fridge, and then proceed.

This many not be a big deal to most folks, but after two years of this I am now shopping for a replacement unit which is easier to turn on.

If this unit had an easy to press "on" button on the front or top of the housing, it would be the #1 best digital thermometer I have ever owned.

2.0 out of 5 stars meh- liked the polder better, January 17, 2012
This review is from: CDN Touch Screen Probe Thermometer and Timer (Kitchen)
the thing does waht it s supposed too- a bit spendy.
The batteries died, and the new ones dont fit right!!!! I use mainstream batteries, instead of the crap ones they give you- but the little "nub" on the top of the battery dosent reach the contact!!!! they have some plastic things in the way. I had to rig it to work with little pieces of foil to make the contact. poor design in my opinion.

otherwise it does what its supposed to.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great thermometer!!, October 29, 2008

This is the 2nd one I've owned, the first one slipped from my hand and the face smashed on my sink cupboard:-(. This one now comes with an off switch which is nice although the first one I had for a year and never had to replace batteries and it didn't have the off switch. The cable is a nice, heavy duty one which I use on my charcoal smoker. It is accurate and a very good buy, I highly recommend it!!

The thermometer has a Quick response, I also use it as a room thermometer. It seems rugged enough. The 4 stars, because the battery compartment is difficult to open.
