Not only for the CEH exam,
By Nikk Gilbert (Japan) - See all my reviews
This review is from: CEH: Official Certified Ethical Hacker Review Guide: Exam 312-50 (Paperback)
This book is great. Why? Well it's not just because its a great study guide for the CEH exam (Certified Ethical Hacker), but also for the amount of info crammed into a small book. If you're wanting to learn the basics of ethical hacking, then this is the book. Its a quick read, packed full of interesting workable senarios.
What this book is: 1. A great book for your junior security people. 2. Very easy to work through the chapters as labs. 3. Lots of references to cool programs you can find and download. What this book isn't: 1. Your not going to learn any code. 2. If you're already a better than average hacker this book is not for you. 3. You won't get CEH certified with this book as a stand alone. 4. You do need a basic understanding of networking, security and systems. (This book isnt hacking for dummies).

CEH in a nutshell,

If you want to go for the CEH certification this book is a pretty good companion. It touches all the objectives for 312-50. But most of the time it's done in just a few lines. So you'll need additional training or bring a lot of experience to pass the CEH exam. If you realy want to know more about ethical hacking and/or penetration testing try the Offensive Security training by the makers of Backtrack.

I find this to be a very important summary review guide, it is only 200 pages. It goes to the core of the CEH exam requisites.
There are other books that you should also use, other books, just don't depend on one book. The following is a detailed book with about 50 or so labs, you need to start using the tools of the trade, and this book will start you off from get go. Terminology errors would confuse someone not already familiar with the subject matter.,
This review is from: CEH: Official Certified Ethical Hacker Review Guide: Exam 312-50 (Paperback)
My good friend's 5-year old daughter could have technically proof-read this book more effectively. Errors within the text are about at least 1 per 5 pages. Items from incorrectly using terms like IRQ instead of IRC to including denial of service as an example of gaining access rather than disrupting access - see page 5 of the on-line view. As well a using the term "owning" as having access. Having access does not imply root-level privs. Having root-level privs is real system owning. Assuming the material covered in this book is a accurate reflection of what the test covers (because of the presence of the term "Official" in the title), anyone worth his/her salary in the computer security industry should do just fine taking the test without prep. Based on the very high-level and sometimes mis-leading descriptions of how attacks work and why they are possible, I would equate this cert's value with that of certain vendor certs testing one's ability to click a check-box without truly understanding what checking the check-box does
When choosing to pursue a certification, personally only the ones that prove technical competency are of value to me and become a serious critique for those I hire. CEH does not appear to be a technical cert. It appears to state only that one can run someone else's tools without truly understanding the why, even hinting at the ability to create a tool on one's own, or apply critical thinking to the situation. Being in the computer security field for a number of years, this book and related letters one would earn after one's name is an embarrassment. This is a horrible book reflecting poorly on any credibility the certification may grant. Perhaps my expectations are too high when the word "hacker" is involved.

Right on Target!,

This book is a perfect review for people who are knowledgeable on the subject of ethical hacking, desire certification, and want that last minute review and prep guide before going in for the exam. It is cost effective and to the point! Many guides already exist to teach the subject of ethical hacking. This official guide sums up exactly (and only) the CEH exam objectives as presented by EC-Council and provides practice tests. Studiers can rapidly recognize areas they need more focus on before testing. Great job!!

This book is a decent overview. It is not the book you would use as your primary tool for getting ready for the certification, but it would be a great 'cram week' tool. I am using it as the 'text book' for an overview course I am teaching to a group of teenagers involved in the Cyber Security Challenges. It is a great starting point, then we develop the individual topics with more detailed materials.
Good book if you already have a good understanding of what you are doing and need to focus for the test. Don't try to take the test using this book alone, but it should be in you study library.

Great basics book. Gets you used to terminology and has many tools listed for hacking across the board. However, if you follow this book verbatim threats will always be one step ahead, as is the going rate with security. Not a bad read.

A Good Overview,

This review is from: CEH: Official Certified Ethical Hacker Review Guide: Exam 312-50 (Paperback)
This book provides a good overview of the objectives of the CEH. However, if you're looking for a study guide that provides more than a high-level preview of the exam content, this is not the book for you.

This book is definitely worth having especially if you've done your homework with more in depth studying. This book is also a good tool to find out what exactly you need to know if you want to get started on the White Hat track.

I have won Defcon CTF competition now two years in a row and have decided to try to get the CEH certification. I purchased this book primarily for additional questions. This material does not have much depth, however, maybe that is all that is required to pass the CEH exam. I would recommend a preliminary hacking course offered at SANS or BlackHat before trying to read this book. The experience will help you to get more out of the book, and most certainly will assist with your skills development.
