Not what it sounds like.,
By Greg Markov (Phoenix, AZ) - See all my reviews
This review is from: C'Est L'Amour: Romantic French Classics (Audio CD)
I bought this CD expecting some classic sounding French music. Well ... it sort of fullfills that descrption. The songs and melodies are definitely French classics. However, the performances are very bland, it sounds like most was done on ... keyboards. Gone are the authentic instruments like accordions and mandolins and in are ... synth strings. The reviewer that said that this sounds like elevator music nailed it right on the head. I love the music, but I hate the way it's done. I am going to keep looking for something that has authentic content AND instrumentation.

Although the instrumentals are nice, this CD wasn't quite what I thought it would be. For some reason I thought the songs would be sung, but instead it's all instrumental. If that's what you prefer, then you probably would enjoy this CD... I was just looking for something that included the lyrics; I wanted a collection of classic French songs sung by the original artists. This is definitely not it... guess I didn't do my homework. C'est la vie!

C'est Magnifique,

This is a wonderful CD! I love it. All of the pieces are instrumental and are extremely relaxing, mellow, and romantic. I have the Ultra Lounge "A Bachelor in Paris" CD which contains many of the same songs. The difference is while the Ultra Lounge version is definately more upbeat and kitchy (loungy), this CD gives you more of the feeling that you are sitting in a streetside cafe in Paris. The CD crosses all age barriers...I love it, my friends love it and my parents love it too. So, if you long for the Parisian way of life...get this CD, make yourself a latte, turn off the lights, light some candles and enjoy.

I was not over thrilled with the cd. It did some justice to theFrench music but not to the extent that accordians are used. Instead of this cd I would recommend Sur Le Pave by The Magic Accordians of Adriano.

I love it, I love it , I love it !!
It's one of the most romantic and relaxing cd I've ever bought and there's not one song that you would like to skip here - it only gets better and better. My hat off to the person who put this collection together- I will be listening to it forever.. A. Daniels, Iceland

I love French music classics, this CD has most of them. I actually bought this CD for my significant other and we listen to it most of the time. If you like the old-Frech touch and romance in music I would recommend the CD. Good Listening.

A French Collection,
This review is from: C'Est L'Amour: Romantic French Classics (Audio CD)
I purchased this CD with another CD that was strictly French Accordian music. This CD contains many French classics, but it won't remind you "street music" you actually hear in Paris. I would recommend to anyone who enjoys classic music, especially when it's French.

While the songs on this disc are generally recognized as French, the performances are too flowery. The flowery nature detracts from the overall French experience. It is not what I expected at all, especially based on the other Amazon reviews. The arrangements on this disc remind me of elevator music.

Those were the words of a song, written for and interpreted by Josephine Baker. Yes, Paris is lovely, sitting in a cafe, sipping a glass of whatever liquid and see people from all over the world pass by! You know, this CD is a gift for my mom so she might enjoy the music of her maiden country in a quiet atmosphere, those well-known classics interpreted by an orchestra, a perfect setting for truly enjoying all-time favorites.

Kudos to Nina Marraccini, the producer of this album who extracted these tracks from the RCA vault. They're a wonderful representation of old-school french charm, lovingly bought into the digital age. No scratchy pops and hisses here, thank heavens. Contrary to another review, this is not all a one-man-and-a-computer act; credit goes to George Melachrino, The Melachrino Strings & Orchestra (which continued on after George's death), Henry Mancini and Trio Musette de Paris. I'm sure a synthesizer or two may have made it into the final mix, but most of the clarity can likely be credited to the album engineers and contemporary studio musicians, whom I suspect comprise the Trio Musette de Paris. I personally don't feel robbed of authenticity because of a clear sound. I'll take that any day over other compilations that sound as though they were recording using tin cans, transferred to cassette, THEN transferred to CD.
This truly is a little gem if you like instrumental music with a classic french flair. For the retail price it's a steal. |
