Product Description

The Model 5445 Four-Channel Video Modulator converts four video and stereo audio inputs to four programmable TV channels (stereo audio is converted to monaural audio after modulation). The Model 5445 modulator offers video loop-through. Jumpers on the Model 5445 terminate the video inputs at 75 ohms. When a jumper is removed, the input can be looped using a "Y" adapter to feed the video to a local monitor or VCR.

If you have four video sources such as satellite television receivers or any four devices that can output composite video, this wonderful little 4 input modulator converts your four separate signals beautifully and simultaneously into either cable channels above 65 or UHF channels in the lower range of channel numbers. I use it with satellite television receivers. If I'm recording what I'm watching, I switch over to cable TV and see what somebody else is watching. This device allows the older televisions in my house to do picture in picture the same way a cheaper RF modulator would, but there's more versatility with a modulator that can output four signals at once. Whatever your application for this device is, I'm confident you will be satisfied.

Setup the modulator. Plugged in my video sources. Programmed the video sources to deliver video on the required channels.

Sweet it worked out of the box.

Note. If you are using this with Cable broadcast or other broadcast you will likely need the appropriate notch filter appropriate to the channels you want to distribute the video on.

I required the following notch filter for my Charter Cable install:
- ChannelPlus NF-471 (CATV Channels 75-80)

I recently had a dish system installed at my house. I have a legacy cable system run thru the entire house, much of which terminates and an old standard definition television. I used this product to broadcast the signal from two dish receivers over my legacy cable so the signal can be watched from any room in the house.

I had attempted to use two cheaper products one modulating on channel 3 and the other on channel 4. That was the only two options available on that product. This did not work well as there was significant cross channel interference.

When I opened the box I was immediately impressed with the heft of the product. I thought wow this is commercial grade stuff.

I choose this product because I could program the channels I which to broadcast on. In my case 70, 75, 80, and 85. Programming was fairly straight forward after reading the instructions. Placing my channels 5 apart eliminated any cross channel interference. I feed the output into my legacy cable feeding 8 televisions across the entire house. The signal quality is excellent and rock solid.

I have been using this for sometime now and have not had to touch it since the install.

Really the best I've found for the price - and the price is very good if you figure it's about $30.00 per channel compared to "junk" at $20.00 per channel.

It outputs a strong, clear, old fashioned TV signal, which is fine for even HDTV's so long as your screen is less than 40". After that, you'll probably begin to notice you're not getting a "great" picture, just a good or OK one. Programming is dirt simple, after you practice a bit. I can now reorder the stations without doing anything more than changing the a,b,c,d channel's programming - no unplugging all those cables for that. (You'll figure out what I mean later. A pencil and paper helps...)

About the only problem I've had is the worry that someone, even me, will touch the buttons on the front of the unit and mess up my stations. Find a place to put this where it won't get handled, or, in the way of other things being moved around very much - you'll sleep better. I've also got the two channel unit that I've had for a year or two; this one is a better bargain and works the same. Buy more than you need, today. Tomorrow you'll be glad you did. Highly recommended, if this is what you need.

Tip:

Don't assume there's something wrong if you pick some stations and it doesn't seem to work well. Your TV guide may "lie" to you about what stations are "blank." It took a lot of trail and error to find ACTUAL clear stations to use this with... I found only a few in my crowded metro area - and used them - but only after I input ONLY the modulator's output into a "a" TV to make sure the unit worked, THEN combined the modulator output with the antennae input to see what happened.

I have a Tivo, HD Tivo, VCR, and DVD hooked up to this unit modulating signals throughout my WHOLE house. The product works as advertised and is simple to use. Paired with a number of Universal RF20 remote controls I am able to watch any signal source on any TV in the house (6 total) and easily pause a program, move to another room, and resume.

Only two caveats:
- The modulated audio signal is mono, not stereo. Personally I don't find this to be a problem as my "main" stereo system is in the room with all the hardware (direct connect, not modulated) so the lack of stereo in the "satellite" locations (bedrooms, kitchen, etc) has never been an issue.

- The unit won't work with a couple of my really old TVs (i.e. 12+ years old). Must be caused by a difference in CATV standards. Works perfectly with anything from the past 10 years though.

Overall still 5 stars though - best product of it's kind based upon my analysis of what's in the market today. I've been using it for 5 months or so and I'm VERY Happy with it.

**2013 Update** - I'm now running two 5445 modulators back-fed to the entire house for a whole house (analog) distribution system. While I'm also running wireless HDMI and Baluns to distribute HD, these 5445 devices are still a key part of my system feeding 11 TV's in my house. The main reason for this update is to state that I've been very happy with the reliability of these devices. Not only have these devices proven rock solid, they have done it for 5+ YEARS of 24 X 7 X 365 operation. They have even survived a couple of power surges that killed other devices.

Now, if Channel Plus would just build us a 4 channel Digital/High-Definition distribution modulator it would be awesome!! :-)
