Product Description

Making mistakes and owning up to them can be difficult, but feeling truly absolved is much more difficult. In Checking Out: An In-Depth Look At Losing Your Mind, new author, Catherine Graves, does what shelves and shelves of self-help books could never do; Graves makes keeping it together possible by realizing that the poor choices and mistakes she makes has consequences and repercussions. By forgiving herself for her actions she is able to inspire others to see that there is life at the other end of immense grief.

When her husband starts to act out-of-character and increasingly disinterested, Catherine Graves suspects the worst—but while she needs confirmation of one sort, a different type of nightmare begins, which becomes the toughest year of her and her two children’s lives - a dreadful year in which nothing for their family will ever be the same.

Moving beyond survivor’s guilt and any sense of resentment, this poignant, bittersweet memoir is about tolerance and humility. Checking Out: An In-Depth Look At Losing Your Mind is about a mother, a son, and a daughter pulling together in order to survive. Readers will respond to the narrator’s honesty—this sort of candor is hard to come by—and be thankful to lead less extraordinary lives. Catherine’s real-life story is as dramatic as any thriller; ultimately, it motivates readers to accept the things in their lives that they cannot change.

About the Author

Catherine Graves is busy raising two children and volunteering for various causes, most recently the Phoenix Children’s Hospital Foundation, Florence Crittendon Center for Girls, Barrow’s Neurological Institute, and the Craniofacial Foundation of Arizona, among others. She lives in Phoenix with her family. Checking Out: An In-Depth Look At Losing Your Mind is her first book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Checking Out - one woman's story about a loved one dying., May 26, 2011

05/25/2011
Well, UPS brought Catherine Graves book to me today (05/25/11) with the title of "Checking Out". It is about how she seen life through her eyes when she finally figured out her most loved husband John would be dead shortly from a brain tumor.

How she survived going through that part of her life (NOT well) and the year or so after that, while she struggled to get back on her two feet, finally figuring out she had two children to care for and a business to run.
She just about crawled down a hole and pulled it in after herself, but loved ones would NOT let her do that.

On her road to recovery, she was misfortune enough to run into a shark-sleezebag of a person masquerading as a man. He proceeded to use her and abuse her greatly as such beings are known to do, driving some of her long time friends off never to return... because she wouldn't open her eyes and SEE how she was being used by a dishonest person.

After a year of that she finally got on the road to recovery and got reconnected with her family, her son and daughter.
I highly recommend it, it has more than several places in the book where the ink didn't print clearly, leaving it blurry so I could hardly read it. And then I figured out there was nothing wrong with the printing, that it was my eyes that were blurry from the tears in them. Once I wiped the tears away the print was clear again.

So, yes, it does have its tear jerker passages, making a person cry right along with Catherine and her dying husband, John.

She does well at making the book a smooth flowing story of her heartaches and how she finally returns to the living, crawling out of her self pity. It is a wonder that Catherine made it, it was touch and go for a while but finally seen the light that her children and friends did love and need her.

There ARE a few errors in the book, such as doubled paragraphs and such, or hiring a private detective a few pages apart, but still, it is an excellent read, and reads quickly. I really enjoy books that keep my attention and flows smoothly. Catherine has done well for her first book.

Hears hoping you are having a happy time in life again, Catherine. That you are loved and can love back again, starting with family and friends. Other people to love WILL come into your life, but do not try to rush it. I think that you possibly learned THAT lesson from Mr Sleezebag M. in your book.

I give it five stars, Catherine, well written for a budding author. Kudos.

Excellent, well written book about the effects of glioblastoma multiforme brain cancer and the grieving process during and after the terminal illness has completed it's course. I highly recommend this book to anyone who's struggling right now or has struggled any kind of issue. Catherine writes very straight forwardly about our human frailties and how we handle them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comforting story, October 25, 2011
Catherine's book was recommended to me from a friend. I lost my husband to brain cancer also. He had a complicated health history-he lived with chronic illness for 31 years of his life. I found this book comforting-it was helpful for me to read about Catherine's journey on how she dealt with her husband's illness and death. In life, we are all caregivers, and it is important to remember to take care of ourselves and our family members, especially through a tragedy such a terminal illness and death. I would highly recommend this book to everyone, whether you've lost a loved one to cancer or not, there is a message in this book for everyone. This is a wonderful read, Catherine, thank you for sharing your story.
