Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Hoig (journalism, emeritus, Univ. of Central Oklahoma) fills a niche in the historiography of the Cherokee by focusing on their chiefs from the period of white contact to 1985. He thereby provides insight into two events often overlooked or minimized in standard accounts: the Chickamaugan Cherokee movement of 1775-94, which is examined in great detail because of its influence on Cherokee politics well into the 19th century, and the Cherokee experience in the Republic of Texas, which ended tragically with the ouster of the tribe in 1839. Unfortunately, other periods in the tribe's history are noted by the name of the chief at the time and little else; ten pages encompass the entire 20th century. The tribe's role in the Civil War is examined in depth, but libraries interested in the topic would be better served by Gen. Stand Watie's Confederate Indians (Univ. of Oklahoma, 1998). Recommended for public and academic libraries.?John Burch, Hagan Memorial Lib., Williamsburg, KY

5.0 out of 5 stars A highly literate, thoughtful, and readable account, November 13, 2002
The Cherokees And Their Chiefs: In The Wake Of Empire by historian Stan Hoig is a solidly researched and superbly presented history of the Cherokee Native American nation, with particular emphasis on the tribe's leaders throughout the centuries. Individual chapters also focus on the conflicts and traumas that involved the tribe from before the United States' independence, to their removal westward and the infamous Trail of Tears, to their rise in political and social clout during the twentieth century. The Cherokees And Their Chiefs is a highly literate, thoughtful, and readable account and a welcome addition to personal and academic Native American Studies collections.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Cherokees and Their Chiefs, July 9, 2000

Having read several books on related subjects in the past few weeks, this selection is one of the most complete and erudite. Primary sources have been used. Despite the dry, intellectual style--the author is able to relay the deep emotional content of his subject.
