5.0 out of 5 stars My business is your business. Period., November 29, 2008
This review is from: THE CHESS ASSASSIN'S BUSINESS MANUAL (Paperback)
"If there is one virtue I want to bring home more than any other in business or your personal life it is in the honesty of being fair in word and deed."
- Bob Long
Entrepreneur, writer, collector, player, artist, historian, and organizer.

These are the words of a man whose life has revolved around the game of chess for 35 years, more so if one counts his just playing the game. Mr. Long has attacked and defended this royal past time from more than one angle. He has organized the popular Chess Festivals, printed and edited hundreds of books and articles in different languages, traveled across the United States numerously, and has collected and sold items consisting of some of the finest chess memorabilia ever sought. Bob Long is the Leonardo da Vinci of chess - a true renaissance man.

The Chess Assassin's Business Manual is Bob's recent compilation of tips, secrets, and anecdotes, truly designed for the next generation of chess entrepreneurs. This "semi-autobiography" reveals not only the business side of chess but the personal correspondence of world champions, historians, collectors, writers and of course, family members. The religiosity of his life is clearly stated and, in turn, drives his ambition and passion to a higher rank. There is a dual relationship in this manual, business facts and personal opinions, where both lead to a deeper level of understanding of not only Bob Long, but of taking care of the most important person in the world - the customer.

Four sections make this manual interesting for the entrepreneur and lover of chess. The contents include a foreword by GM Karsten Mueller and a preface followed by Section One that is entitled "Business." Section Two describes a coalescence of business and chess, while Section Three describes just the game. "Bonus Round" is the heading for Section Four, a real subjective segment that although may seem negative, it clearly illustrates the statement "if it's too good to be true, it probably is." The side notes on the pages offer readers small blurbs that really blend in nicely; some are informative, some are hilarious.

An anthology such as The Chess Assassin's Business Manual would not be complete without pictures. Although not in color, the black-and-white photos are interesting and enjoyable to look at. Some are old and may appear a bit grainy, but the fantastic and eye-catching cover created by Bob's son Rob will no doubt please the readers. This manual does not include an index, but it is not necessary due to its storyline style. The style is quite different in that it offers an inconsistency of time, not the same old, boring, chronologically ordered saga that starts "Once upon a time," peaks in the middle, and ends with "happily ever after." One can open this book and begin reading without ever having to read prior chapters. It is echoed on the back that the "stratagems are revealed in a way that anyone can understand." Therefore, caution all "experts," Bob's definition of such a person is "an unknown drip under pressure."

Slick, smooth, hilarious, and serious, The Chess Assassin's Business Manual offers anyone in the chess world a collection of facts blended with opinions. Bob Long tells it as it is and always looks out for the best interest of the customer. He offers great prices, corresponds quickly and professionally, and gets the job done. Simply put, if you know what you want and are willing to be patient, the result of your project will be phenomenal. Anyone seeking publication needs to contact Bob first, but of course, if you're an expert and already know everything about the business, then you're the reason why the statement "there's sucker born every minute" exists.
