Product Description

The Chia Seed is an amazing food. For centuries many have used the seeds for a host of different reasons. Native Americans would take a pouch of seeds and a gourd of water on their trips. The seeds were their food source and taken with the water they would hydrate their bodies for endurance. When you hydrate the seeds in water the seeds shell opens up and absorbs up to nine times its volume in water. This then forms a gel, which is called Chia Seed Gel. The gel helps keep your body hydrated. The gel is also 90% soluble fiber, which is beneficial for your digestive track. People use the seeds when they are involved in sports or physical activities for endurance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why did it take me so long to find these?! March 10, 2011

I can soak a teaspoon or so of Chia seeds in a cup of hot tea and sip it throughout the afternoon, and it helps to keep me from feeling hungry thanks to the gelling action of Chia's fiber. Thanks to Chia seeds I can get sufficientfiber more easily through food, rather than taking bulky pills. I was also thrilled to read that the seeds are high in iron, calcium, and omega-3, all things that I really need. I follow the advice I found online somewhere and start my day by chewing a small amount of seeds, *then* drinking down a cup of water. The few moments' head-start before the seeds encounter the water allow them to absorb some of the excess acid that bothers my stomach.

I highly recommend doing a quick web search; there are plenty of suggestions out there for using Chia seeds in a variety of ways. They can help you to eat less without causing nasty drug side effects or negatively impacting your nutrition intake.

The 1 lb size offered here is a nice introductory amount to experiment with, and it's sealed well in heavy-duty packaging.

5.0 out of 5 stars The food of ancient America October 12, 2009

I am the biggest fan of Chia Seeds now! I had no idea that they were a protein. I bought these to sprinkle on my yogurt for breakfast and salads at lunch. I feel full for hours! I don't eat much animal protein and eating Chia seeds had made me feel much more healthy and strong.

Seller of this item was a joy to purchase from and I would recommend them for your Chia and health food needs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Chia Seeds - but be careful which supplier! March 29, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
UPDATE January 2013:
The listing says these Chia Seeds are now a different brand, Raw Food World. My orders of Chia Seeds from Raw Food World have always been HIGH quality. I am changing my rating to 5 stars to reflect my experience with the Raw Food World brand.

My original review, below, was 2 stars & referred to another brand sold under this listing previously.

TIP: for those who don't like the texture of the gel you can try putting some seeds (eg 1/2 to 1 tsp?) in your mouth and swallowing with water, just as you would pills. I do that all the time now since I would forget I had gel already made and it would go bad after a week or two sitting in the back of the fridge. This way is much better for me! :) Just make sure to drink a full cup of water/beverage with it.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I've been using Chia Seeds for many years, mostly by making a gel and taking a few tablespoons each day, and sometimes sprinkling the seeds on cereal or other foods. I find that when I take the gel consistently (eg at least 3 Tbsp per day), I have more energy and just feel better all around. I notice a marked difference if I skip a few days in a row.

However, I am learning to be more careful where I get my Chia Seeds! I usually buy from Raw Food World (great prices here on Amazon, though they are going up), or sometimes from the local health food store eg NOW brand, or Red Mills, and have never had a problem.

I placed an order at the end of January (this exact listing, though the supplier shows up as a different company currently). The supplier was Seeking Health, aka HealthEGoods. The Chia Seeds arrived in a foil lined package that looks like plain brown wrapper on the outside. I didn't open it until a few weeks later, when I ran out of my supply. As soon as I opened the package, I noticed a funny smell - the only way to describe it is like opening up a pack of bandaids, a sterile sort of smell (my kids describe it differently; they say it "smells like a barn"). Since I had no other Chia Seeds, I went ahead & made the gel. It tasted funny, like a smoked flavor. Not good at all! (Chia Seed gel should have no flavor or smell, just a noticeable texture) I contacted the company, but they didn't call me back. I called them again a few days later and another rep answered & was very helpful. He offered to send me another package, ensuring it would be from a different batch. In the meantime, I removed the Chia Seeds from the first package to see if that would help, but a few days later the Chia Seeds still smell bad.

The replacement package arrived quickly, but the new package smelled the same. I called the company again, and the rep seemed surprised and didn't understand what the problem could be. (They say their Chia Seeds are "chemical free", so maybe it's the packaging?) I told her after having received two bad packages from them, I would not order from them again, but I just called to suggest they go open up a package and see for themselves. The rep wasn't so nice after that so I rang off.

I hope others leaving reviews will indicate the supplier so we know which ones are good and which to avoid. I would highly recommend Chia Seeds from Raw Food World, or the NOW or Red Mills brands; I haven't a bad experience with them in all the years I've bought those brands.
