5.0 out of 5 stars Catholic Bible History for Early Grades, June 11, 2006

This is a reprint of a book used in American Catholic schools in the first half of the 20th century. It contains brief chapters summarizing Bible events. There are also many black and white line drawings to illustrate the stories. At the end of each chapter there are questions to test the child's retention of what he has read or heard.

We use this book in Kindergarten and First Grade for our "Bible Storybook" project. We spend two class periods a week on it for two years. The first day, I read aloud the chapter. It is short, only a few paragraphs and can be done in just a few minutes. Then I have him answer orally the questions at the end of the chapter. They are very brief. Then he retells the story he has just read in his own words. I write out his version in a blank book. At this age, I have found that penmanship and spelling skills are not up to being able to write out the story himself. That is the end of the first class period. The next class is spent illustrating the story. We did one illustration in color per chapter. I give him plenty of time so he can do his best work. At the end of two years, we have a "Bible Storybook" written and illustrated by our son. The project itself covers history, composition (oral retelling) and art.
